What Felipe did
VIDEO: Philip preaches to the Ethiopian eunuch
1. Watch the VIDEO or read Acts 8:30, 31. Then discuss the following questions:
How did Felipe start the conversation?
Philip asked him a question related to what the Ethiopian eunuch was doing, he asked him if he understood what he was reading.
Why was this a natural way to start a conversation and teach this man something new?
This was a natural way to start the conversation and teach the Ethiopian eunuch something new, because Philip noticed that the man was reading a passage of scripture, to be more exact the book of Isaiah. Which indicated that the eunuch was interested in understanding the content.
When asked if he understood what he was reading, Philip showed interest in his understanding and gave the Eunuch the opportunity to express any confusion or doubts he might have.
What do we learn from Philip's example?
From Felipe, we learn the importance of starting a conversation by addressing the person's current interest or activity. Since by asking the Eunuch if he understood what he was reading, Felipe showed interest in what mattered to the Eunuch at that moment, which facilitated a meaningful and pleasant conversation. This teaches us the importance of showing genuine interest in the interests and concerns of others to start a conversation.
Philip was willing to stop and offer his help to the Ethiopian eunuch when he needed guidance in understanding the scriptures. This demonstrates the importance of being available and willing to teach when opportunities arise to share the knowledge of Jehovah.
We can also see that Philip used simple and direct questions to start the conversation with the eunuch, which allowed clear and open communication to be established. This clarity in communication is essential to facilitate mutual understanding and to help others understand the teachings of the Bible.
