DAILY TEXT, Today's Friday October 7, 2022. Think in a way that shows good judgment (Rom. 12:3).

Let's Examine the Scriptures Every Day 2022

Friday October 7

Think in a way that shows good judgment (Rom. 12:3).

We must cultivate humility, for the proud do not demonstrate "good judgment." They are conflicted and egocentric. Also, their thinking and actions often hurt themselves and others. If you don't change your thinking, Satan will blind you and corrupt your mind (2 Cor. 4:4; 11:3). Humble people have good judgment. They see themselves in a reasonable and balanced way, and understand that others are superior to them in many ways (Phil. 2:3). Furthermore, they know that “God opposes the arrogant but shows undeserved kindness to the humble” (1 Pet. 5:5). Those who have good judgment do not want God to oppose them. If we want to remain humble, we must put into practice this biblical advice: "Put off the old personality and its practices, and put on the new personality." This requires that we study the example of Jesus and try to imitate him as faithfully as possible (Col. 3:9, 10; 1 Pet. 2:21). w20.07 7 paras. 16, 17.

What does the Bible say about having friends?

Jehovah wants us to have a good time in the company of our friends and family (Ps. 133:1). In fact, Jesus had good friends (John 15:15). Furthermore, the Bible speaks of the benefits of having true friends (Prov. 17:17; 18:24). And it also tells us not to isolate ourselves (Prov. 18:1). Many believe that social networks serve to have a large number of friends and not to feel alone. But, if we use them, we must be careful.

Why some people who use social networks can feel lonely and depressed?

According to some studies, those who spend a lot of time looking at the comments and photos that others post on social networks can end up feeling lonely and depressed. Why? One possible cause is that most people upload photos of the most interesting moments of their lives: the best images of themselves, their friends and the exciting places they have visited. Viewers of these images may conclude that their life is very ordinary and even boring by comparison. A 19-year-old sister admits: “I started to get frustrated seeing others having so much fun on the weekends while I stayed home bored to death.”

How does 1 Peter 3:8 help us put social media to good use?

Sure, social networks can be put to good use, for example, to keep in touch with family and friends. But have we realized that much of what people upload to social networks is just to impress others? It seems that what they seek is to be the center of attention. Some even post rude and vulgar comments about their photos or those of others. None of this fits with the qualities that Christians should cultivate, such as humility and empathy (read 1 Peter 3:8).

How does the Bible help us not to be vain?

If we use social networks, let us ask ourselves: “What are the comments, photos and videos that I upload like? Could you give the impression that I'm showing off? Could they arouse the envy of others? The Bible says, “Nothing in the world—the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, and the display of things one has—comes from the Father, but comes from the world” (1 John 2: 16). A Bible commentary explains that the phrase “the ostentation of the things that one has” refers to someone who “seeks to make himself more important than he is.” We Christians do not need others to admire us. Rather, we follow this advice from the Bible: “Let us not become self-centered, fostering competition with one another and envying one another” (Gal. 5:26). If we are humble
