Make Return Visits (4 min.) FROM HOUSE TO HOUSE. Use one of the “Bible Truths We Love to Teach” from appendix A of the brochure A Work of Love (lmd lesson 9 item 4).
Setting: During a return visit, the publisher continues a previous conversation with someone who was worried about whether their deceased relative was suffering. The publisher offers comfort by using a Bible text that indicates that those who have died are not conscious of anything. This brings peace to the person and allows the publisher to extend an invitation to start a Bible study.
Publisher: Hi, [name], it's good to see you again. How are you?
Assistant: Hi, [name]. I'm feeling a little better, thanks for asking. I'm still processing the loss of my aunt. It's a difficult time, but I'm trying to stay strong.
Publisher: I'm so sorry, [name]. I know this must be very difficult for you. The last time we spoke, you told me you were worried about whether your aunt was suffering.
Assistant: Yes, it's true. I wonder if she's at peace, if she's suffering, or if she's alone. It's hard not to think about it.
Publisher: The Bible gives us an answer in Ecclesiastes 9:5, and I would like you to read it.
Assistant: Of course. Ecclesiastes 9:5 says: “For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing at all, and they receive no further reward, since all memory of them has faded away.”
Publisher: This means that the dead are not conscious; they do not feel or suffer. They are in a state of rest.
Assistant: That's some comfort. It makes me feel a little better to know that suffering ends with death. Not even those who have done terrible things suffer.
Publisher: Yes, death is like a deep sleep, and the Bible promises that Jesus will raise the dead. Isn't that beautiful? The resurrection is one of the most beautiful promises in the Bible.
Assistant: Yes, it's a very beautiful promise.
Publisher: I'm glad to hear this brings you comfort. How about we study the Bible together? That way you can learn more about God's promises. Studying the Bible helps us live according to its principles and also gives us the wonderful hope that we will soon see our loved ones who have died again.
Assistant: Yes, I would like that very much.
