The appointed time of the vision is still far off (Hab. 2:3).
We live in a time when most people do not believe that the end of this system is near and even mock us for believing it (2 Pet. 3:3, 4). There are many things we do not know. We need to have strong faith that the end will come precisely when Jehovah has decided and be convinced that he will take care of us.
We also need to strengthen our faith that Jehovah is using the “faithful and discreet slave” to guide us today (Matt. 24:45). We may receive specific, life-saving instructions when the great tribulation begins. Now is the time to strengthen our trust in those who direct Jehovah’s organization. If we are not obedient and do not trust them now, it will be more difficult for us to obey the instructions they give us during the great tribulation. w24.09 11 pars. 11, 12
Why do we need to have strong faith?
We need to have faith like that of the Christians to whom Paul wrote that letter. We live in a time when most people do not believe that the end of this system is near and even ridicule us for believing it (2 Pet. 3:3, 4). Furthermore, although the Bible gives some details about what will happen during the great tribulation, there are many things we do not know. We need to have strong faith that the end will come precisely when Jehovah has decided and be convinced that he will take care of us (Hab. 2:3).
Why was the advice in Hebrews 13:5 so timely?
While the Hebrew Christians awaited the signal to flee, they had to live simply and avoid “the love of money” (read Hebrews 13:5). Some of them had experienced hunger and poverty (Heb. 10:32-34). Although there had been a time when they were willing to endure hardship for the good news, some may have begun to focus on earning more money to protect themselves from poverty and danger. But no amount of money could save their lives when Jerusalem was destroyed (Jas. 5:3). Moreover, if someone had a love of money, it would be very difficult for them to flee and leave their home and possessions behind.
What kind of decisions will we make if we have strong faith?
Having strong faith that the end of this system will come at any moment will help us avoid falling into materialism. During the great tribulation, money will be worthless. The Bible says that people will “throw their silver in the streets” when they realize that “neither their silver nor their gold will be able to save them in the day of Jehovah’s fury.” (Ezek. 7:19) Instead of focusing on making more and more money, it is best to make choices that will help us live a simple and balanced life. This includes resisting the temptation to go into unnecessary debt or to become so entangled in material things that we have no time for anything else. We must also be careful not to become too attached to what we possess. (Matt. 6:19, 24) As the end draws near, we will likely have to prove whether we trust more in Jehovah or in our possessions.
