I will forgive their error and remember their sin no more (Jer. 31:34).

Jehovah spoke to Jeremiah the words of today’s text. The apostle Paul quoted from this verse when he said: “I will remember their sins no more.” (Heb. 8:12) What does this expression mean? In the Bible, the verb “remember” does not always refer to bringing something from the past back to mind. Sometimes it conveys the idea of ​​acting or taking action. For example, the criminal who was nailed to a stake next to Jesus said to him: “Remember me when you come into your Kingdom.” (Luke 23:42, 43) Clearly, he was not simply asking Jesus to think about him at that moment. And Jesus implied that he would indeed do something about that man: resurrect him. So when Jehovah says that he will remember our sins no more, he means that he will not take action against us. Nor will he hold them against us today or tomorrow or ever, for he has forgiven us. w25.02 11 pars. 14, 15

Why can we trust in Jehovah's forgiveness?

When Jehovah forgives us, we can be sure that he is our friend again. Knowing this helps us to overcome feelings of guilt and not to fear that he is holding a grudge or looking for an opportunity to punish us. That will not happen! Why are we so convinced? Because he himself told the prophet Jeremiah: “I will forgive their error and remember their sin no more.” (Jer. 31:34) The apostle Paul quoted from this verse when he said: “I will remember their sins no more.” (Heb. 8:12) What does this expression mean?

According to the Bible, how do we feel when Jehovah forgives us?

Let us consider another comparison the Bible uses to help us understand how we feel when Jehovah forgives us. Since we are all imperfect, we are, so to speak, “slaves to sin.” But when Jehovah forgives us, it is as if he breaks our chains, and we are “set free from sin.” (Rom. 6:17, 18; Rev. 1:5) Indeed, knowing that Jehovah forgives us makes us feel as incredibly happy as a slave who gains his freedom.

Why can we say that receiving Jehovah's forgiveness is like being cured of an illness? (Isaiah 53:5)

(Read Isaiah 53:5.) In the last comparison we will consider, the Bible speaks of sin as if it were a fatal disease. But Jehovah has healed us through the sacrifice of his Son, thus making it possible for us to regain our friendship with him, which is damaged when we sin. (1 Pet. 2:24) When a seriously ill person is healed, he feels immensely happy. And we feel the same way when Jehovah forgives us and “heals” our friendship with him.
