Enjoy the wife of your youth (Prov. 5:18).

Jehovah is the “happy God” and he wants us to be happy too (1 Tim. 1:11). He has given us many gifts to enjoy in life (Jas. 1:17). One of those gifts is marriage. When a man and a woman get married, they promise to love, respect, and care for each other. Such a close relationship brings them immense joy.

Sadly, in this world, many marriages fail to live up to the promises made on their wedding day. As a result, they are unhappy. How does Jehovah expect husbands to treat their wives? Jehovah commands husbands to honor their wives. Honor stems from the respect we feel for a person, and this is reflected in how we treat them. A husband honors his wife by treating her with kindness and affection. (1 Pet. 3:7) w25.01 8 pars. 1, 2, 4; 9 par. 5

How does Jehovah view men who physically abuse their wives? (Colossians 3:19)

Physical abuse. Jehovah hates violent people (Ps. 11:5). He is especially displeased when husbands mistreat their wives (Mal. 2:16; read Colossians 3:19). According to the theme text, 1 Peter 3:7, if a husband does not treat his wife well, his relationship with God will be damaged. Jehovah may not even hear her prayers.

According to Ephesians 4:31, 32, in what ways should men never speak to their wives?

Verbal abuse. Some husbands speak to their wives in anger and with hurtful words. But Jehovah hates anger, rage, shouting, and hurtful words, as Ephesians 4:31, 32 indicates (read it). Jehovah hears everything and is very attentive to how husbands speak to their wives, even when they are alone in their homes. A husband who speaks to his wife in a harsh and inconsiderate way not only damages his marriage but also damages his friendship with God (James 1:26).

What is Jehovah's opinion of pornography, and why?

Pornography. What does Jehovah think of pornography? He hates it. A husband who views lewd images damages his relationship with Jehovah and disrespects his wife, degrading her. Jehovah expects husbands to be faithful not only in their actions but also in their thoughts. Jesus said that a man who looks at another woman lustfully “has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” (Matt. 5:28, 29)

Why does Jehovah hate it when a Christian tries to get his wife to perform sexual acts that make her feel degraded?

Trying to get a wife to perform sexual acts that would make her feel degraded. Some husbands pressure their wives into participating in sexual acts that make them feel dirty, mistreated, or unloved. Jehovah hates such a cold and selfish attitude. He expects husbands to treat their wives with love and kindness and to respect their feelings and conscience (Eph. 5:28, 29). So, what can a Christian husband do if he has fallen into any of the behaviors discussed in this subheading? What can he do to change his way of thinking and acting?
