Death spread to all men, because all had sinned (Rom. 5:12).
We may be determined not to let anything separate us from Jehovah. But we are imperfect, and we could be tempted to do something wrong (Rom. 7:21-23). Unexpectedly, we may face temptations that seem very difficult to resist. If we want to be faithful to Jehovah and his Son, we must heed Jesus’ warning to always be on our guard. Temptations are presented to everyone, but each of us has our own weaknesses. So each one will be tempted by something different. For example, some may be struggling with the desire to commit a serious sin, such as sexual immorality. Others may have a tendency toward impure acts, such as masturbation or viewing pornography. And still others may be striving to overcome common flaws in this world, such as an independent attitude, fear of man, or a bad temper. w24.07 14 par. 3; 15 par. 5
What should we acknowledge?
Do you know your weaknesses? It is dangerous to act as if we don't have any or to think that we are so strong that we will never fall into temptation (1 John 1:8). After all, Paul said that even “those who have the proper spiritual qualifications” must keep a watchful eye on themselves so that they too are not tempted (Gal. 6:1). Surely, it is in our best interest to be honest with ourselves and acknowledge the areas in which we are not strong (2 Cor. 13:5).
Which points do we need to protect the most?
If we have already identified our weak points, what should we do? Strengthen our defenses! Consider this: In Bible times, what were the most vulnerable points of a walled city? The gates. So those were the places that needed the most protection. Similarly, we need to especially protect the points where we know we are most vulnerable (1 Cor. 9:27).
What should the young man in Proverbs chapter 7 have done to avoid committing a serious sin? (Proverbs 7:8, 9, 13, 14, 21)
How can we protect ourselves from temptation? Let's look at what Proverbs chapter 7 teaches us. It tells the story of a young man who committed a serious sexual sin with an immoral woman. Verse 22 indicates that he pursued her "suddenly." But the preceding verses reveal that he actually took several steps that gradually led him to that sin.
What were those steps? First, he passed by “on the street near the corner of that woman” at dusk. Then, he walked in the direction of her house (read Proverbs 7:8, 9). Later, when he saw the woman, he did not turn away. Instead, he let her kiss him and tell him about the peace offerings she had made, perhaps trying to convince him that she was not a bad person (read Proverbs 7:13, 14, 21). If the young man had not taken these steps, he would have avoided temptation and would not have committed the sin.
