Dear brothers:
If we went out on the street and asked different people who Jesus is, we would probably receive very varied answers. Some would say he was a great teacher, others that he was a prophet, and many would claim that he is God himself.
But when it comes to knowing the truth, what matters most is not what people think, but what God's Word says. Therefore, over the next few minutes, we will examine what the Bible teaches about Jesus' identity and see why understanding this topic strengthens our relationship with Jehovah.
LET'S READ MATTHEW 16:16
“Simon Peter answered him, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’”
In this text we find the answer the apostle Peter gave when Jesus asked who his disciples said he was. Let's look at an important detail. Peter didn't say that Jesus was God, but that he was the Son of the living God. Furthermore, Jesus didn't correct this answer; on the contrary, he approved it and explained that this truth came from his heavenly Father.
This account makes it clear that the disciples understood that Jesus was a distinct person from his Father. The Bible repeatedly presents Jehovah as the Father and Jesus as his beloved Son.
So why is it so important to recognize this fact?
LET'S READ JOHN 3:16
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
This verse helps us to understand the depth of Jehovah’s love. He gave his only-begotten Son for us. The expression “only-begotten Son” indicates that Jesus was the only being created directly by Jehovah and that, through him, God created all other things.
When we understand that Jesus is truly the Son of God, we appreciate all the more the sacrifice that both Jehovah and his Son made for mankind. Jehovah was willing to give up what he loved most, and Jesus obediently accepted giving his life so that we could have the hope of living forever.
However, recognizing that Jesus is the Son of God is not simply about knowing a biblical fact. That truth should influence the way we live.
LET'S READ 1 JOHN 4:15
“If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God remains in him and he in God.”
This verse shows that acknowledging Jesus involves much more than simply saying a few words. It means accepting the role Jehovah has given him as our Savior, our High Priest, and the King of God's Kingdom.
It also means exercising faith in him, following his teachings, and striving to imitate his example each day. When we do that, we honor not only the Son, but also the Father who sent him.
Conclusion
The Bible clearly identifies who Jesus is. He is not Almighty God; he is Jehovah's beloved Son. Understanding this truth strengthens our faith, increases our gratitude for the ransom, and draws us closer to our heavenly Father.
Let us, then, continue to deepen our knowledge of Jesus and demonstrate, through our conduct and our preaching, that we recognize with conviction that Jesus Christ is truly the Son of God.
