Stay awake and pray constantly so that you will not fall into temptation (Matt. 26:41).

“The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Matt. 26:41b). With these words, Jesus showed that he understood that human beings are imperfect and make mistakes, but at the same time he warned us to beware of overconfidence. Just hours before Jesus said these words, the disciples had confidently declared that they would never abandon him (Matt. 26:35). They had the best intentions, but they didn’t realize how easy it could be to give in to pressure when things got tough. That is why Jesus spoke to them in today’s text.

When he was arrested, what did the disciples do? Sadly, because they were not vigilant, they fell into temptation. The situation caught them off guard, and they ended up doing exactly what they had said they would never do: abandon Jesus. (Matt. 26:56) w24.07 14 pars. 1, 2

If we want to be faithful to Jehovah, why can't we trust him?

We too must not become complacent. Of course, we are all determined not to let anything distance us from Jehovah. But we are also imperfect, and we could be tempted to do something wrong (Rom. 5:12; 7:21-23). Unexpectedly, we may face temptations that seem very difficult to resist. If we want to be faithful to Jehovah and Jesus, we must heed the warning and always be on our guard.

Why should we be on guard against committing sins that are less serious?

Some sins are less serious than others, but they can still damage our relationship with Jehovah. Furthermore, they could lead us to commit more serious sins.

We all face temptations, but each of us has our own weaknesses. So each of us will be tempted by something different. For example, some may be struggling with the desire to commit a serious sin, such as sexual immorality. Others may have a tendency toward impure acts, such as masturbation or viewing pornography. And still others may be striving to overcome common flaws in this world, such as independence, fear of man, or a bad temper. With good reason, James said that “each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed” (James 1:14).

What should we acknowledge?

Do you know your weaknesses? It is dangerous to act as if we don't have any or to think that we are so strong that we will never fall into temptation (1 John 1:8). After all, Paul said that even “those who have the proper spiritual qualifications” must keep a watchful eye on themselves so that they too are not tempted (Gal. 6:1). Surely, it is in our best interest to be honest with ourselves and acknowledge the areas in which we are not strong (2 Cor. 13:5).
