If any of you lacks wisdom, let him continually ask God for it (James 1:5).
Jehovah promises to give wisdom “generously to all and without reproach.” That wisdom will enable us to discern whether a certain decision will please him or not. After praying for Jehovah’s guidance, pay close attention to his answer. Consider this example. If you are traveling and get lost, you might ask someone in the area for help. But you wouldn’t leave before receiving an answer, would you? You would listen very carefully to their directions. Similarly, after asking Jehovah for wisdom, try to “listen” to his answer by looking for Bible standards and principles that relate to your situation. For example, suppose you are invited to a social gathering. When deciding whether to attend, you might consider what the Bible says about wild parties, bad associations, and the importance of putting the Kingdom above your personal preferences. What can you do if you need help finding the information you are looking for?
However, you may sometimes need help finding the information you are looking for. An experienced brother or sister could give you suggestions or ideas. But it is good for you to do your own research as well. There is a wealth of information in our study tools, such as the Study Guide for Jehovah’s Witnesses and the book Bible Texts for Christian Living. Remember that your goal is to make a decision that pleases Jehovah.
How can we be sure that our decision will please Jehovah? (Ephesians 5:17)
How can we be sure that our decision will please Jehovah? First, we need to know him well. Proverbs 9:10 says that “the knowledge of the Most Holy is understanding.” That means that to have genuine understanding, we need to know Jehovah’s qualities, his purpose, and what he loves and hates. Ask yourself: “In view of what I know about Jehovah, what decision will please him?” (Read Ephesians 5:17.)
Why are biblical principles more important to us than family traditions or local customs?
To please Jehovah, we sometimes have to do things that disappoint our family or friends. For example, well-intentioned parents might pressure their daughter to marry a man who has money or can pay a large dowry, even if he is not spiritually strong. Of course, it is natural for them to want their daughter to be well-off. But who will help her strengthen her friendship with God? What does Jehovah think about this? We find the answer at Matthew 6:33, where Christians are encouraged to keep “seeking first the Kingdom.” Although we honor our parents and respect those in our community, what matters most to us is making Jehovah happy.
