Many of the Corinthians who heard the message began to believe and to be baptized (Acts 18:8).
What helped the Corinthians to get baptized? (2 Cor. 10:4, 5) God used his Word and his powerful holy spirit to help them completely change their lives (Heb. 4:12). The Corinthians who accepted the good news were able to leave behind practices such as drunkenness, theft, and homosexuality (1 Cor. 6:9-11).
It is true that some had to make major changes in their lives in order to get baptized, but they did not think they would be unable to do so. They made a tremendous effort to begin walking on the narrow road that leads to everlasting life (Matt. 7:13, 14). What about you? Are you struggling to overcome a vice or a bad habit? Do not give up! Ask Jehovah to help you by means of his holy spirit to resist temptation. w25.03 6 pars. 15-17
What obstacles could have prevented the Corinthians from being baptized?
The inhabitants of the ancient city of Corinth were known for being materialistic and leading immoral lives. Many of them practiced things that went against Jehovah’s standards. So in that environment, it would have been very difficult for anyone to accept the truth. But when the apostle Paul arrived in that city and preached the good news about the Christ, “many of the Corinthians who heard the message began to believe and to be baptized.” (Acts 18:7-11) Moreover, the Lord Jesus Christ appeared to Paul in a vision and told him: “I have many people in this city.” So the apostle stayed there preaching for a year and a half.
How does Monika's example help him?
Monika, who lives in Georgia, worked hard as a young girl to give up inappropriate entertainment and the habit of using bad language because she wanted to get baptized. She says: “Prayer gave me the strength I needed. Jehovah knew that I wanted to do what was right and he was always there to help and guide me.” Monika got baptized when she was 16. Do you also need to stop doing something to please Jehovah and serve him? Keep asking him for his spirit to make the necessary changes, and he will generously give it to you. (John 3:34)
What will help him overcome obstacles as big as mountains?
Whatever obstacles you may have to overcome to get baptized, never doubt that Jehovah loves you and wants you to be part of his family. Jesus told several of his disciples: “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move over there,’ and it will move; nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matt. 17:20) Those disciples had been with Jesus for only a few years, so their faith still needed to grow. Even so, Jesus promised them that if they developed strong faith, Jehovah would help them move obstacles as big as mountains. And he will help you too!
