Wisdom is with the humble (Prov. 11:2).
When you read the Bible, it's good to be modest and not try to apply everything you learn at once. Here's a suggestion: make a list of the things you need to improve on, choose one or two to focus on first, and leave the rest for later.
Where could you begin? First, you could focus on the goal that is easiest for you to achieve or the one you most need to improve. Once you know where you want to start, look for information in our publications. Pray to Jehovah and ask him to give you “both the desire and the strength to act.” (Phil. 2:13) Then put into practice what you have learned. Seeing the progress you make will surely motivate you to work on another goal. In fact, the changes you make will likely help you improve in the next areas on your list. w24.09 6, 7 pars. 13, 14
Why shouldn't you be discouraged if, while reading the Bible, you see that you need to make changes?
Don’t be discouraged if you find that you need to make a few changes. Actually, that shows that you read the Bible with the right attitude and humility, and that you try to be honest with yourself. Remember also that putting on “the new personality” is an ongoing process (Col. 3:10). What will help you to keep applying God’s Word?
What is the difference between Jehovah's servants and many of those who read the Bible? (1 Thessalonians 2:13)
Some people say they have read the Bible dozens of times. But do they truly believe in it and have they allowed its teachings to change their lives? Sadly, in most cases, no. How different we Jehovah’s servants are! Like the first-century Christians, we accept the Bible “for what it truly is, the word of God.” And so we strive to show that it is at work in our lives. (Read 1 Thessalonians 2:13.)
What will help us put God's Word into practice?
It is not always easy to read and apply God’s Word. We may not find the time to read it. We may tend to read it so quickly that we retain almost nothing. Or we may become discouraged when we see all the changes we need to make. Whatever obstacle you face, Jehovah will help you overcome it. Accept his help; do not just hear God’s Word and forget about it. Rather, put it into practice. Without a doubt, the more you read the Bible and apply it in your life, the happier you will be. (James 1:25)
