Let us examine the Scriptures every day 2026

For you, O Jehovah, are good and willing to forgive (Psalm 86:5).

We are already benefiting from Christ’s sacrifice. For example, thanks to the ransom, Jehovah forgives our sins. And he does so not because he is obligated, but because he wants to (Ps. 103:3, 10-13). Some feel that they do not deserve Jehovah’s forgiveness. But in reality, none of us do. The apostle Paul admitted: “I do not deserve to be called an apostle.” But then he added: “By God’s undeserved kindness I am what I am” (1 Cor. 15:9, 10).

When we repent of our sins, Jehovah forgives us. Why? Not because we deserve it, but because he loves us. So if we feel bad because we think we do not deserve Jehovah’s forgiveness, let us remember that he did not give the ransom for perfect people, but for imperfect people who repent of their sins. Why can no one claim to deserve Jehovah's mercy?

No matter how many years we have served Jehovah, we should never think that we have earned his mercy. Of course, he values all the things we have done for him (Heb. 6:10). But he did not give us his Son as payment for services rendered, but as a gift. If we were to claim that we have earned his mercy or special treatment, we would actually be saying that we did not need Christ to die for us (compare Galatians 2:21).

Why did Paul exert himself in his service to Jehovah?

Paul knew that he could not earn God’s forgiveness. So why did he exert himself so much in his service to Jehovah? Because he wanted to show his gratitude for God’s undeserved kindness (Eph. 3:7). In the same way, we continue to serve Jehovah zealously not because we want to earn his mercy, but because we want to show him our gratitude for it.

What is another way in which we now benefit from the ransom? (Romans 5:1; James 2:23).

Another benefit we now have thanks to the ransom is that we can have a close friendship with Jehovah. As we saw in the preceding article, at birth we do not have a relationship with God. But because of the ransom, we can enjoy “peace with God” and draw close to him. (Read Romans 5:1; James 2:23.)
