The ability to think will watch over you and discernment will protect you (Prov. 2:11).
Every day we have to make decisions. Some are relatively easy, such as what to have for breakfast or what time to go to bed. But other decisions are more difficult. For example, those that involve our health, our happiness, our family, or our worship of God. We want our decisions to be good for ourselves and our family, but our greatest desire is that they please Jehovah. (Rom. 12:1, 2)
An important step in making a wise decision is to have all the information. Why is this important? Imagine a patient goes to the doctor because they have a serious health problem. Would the doctor decide on a treatment without first examining the patient or asking questions? Of course not. In the same way, you will make better decisions if you first consider all the information related to your situation. w25.01 14 pars. 1-3
According to Proverbs 18:13, how can you make sure you know all the information?
Generally, asking questions will help you find out the information you need. For example, imagine you are invited to a social gathering. Should you attend? If you don’t know the host well or what their plans are, you will need to ask questions like these: “Where and when will the gathering be held? How many people will be there? Who will be supervising? Who will be attending? What activities are planned? Will alcoholic beverages be served?” The answers to these questions will help you make a good decision. (Read Proverbs 18:13.)
What should you do once you know all the information?
Once you have all the information, try to see the big picture. For example, what if you learn that some people who do not respect Bible principles will be attending that meeting, or that alcoholic beverages will be served without supervision? Is there a risk that the meeting could get out of hand and turn into a wild party? (1 Pet. 4:3) Or what should you do if attending that event would mean missing your congregation meeting or being unable to go out in the ministry? Seeing the big picture will make it easier for you to make a good decision. But that is only the first step. You need to do more. You know how you see the situation; but what is Jehovah’s opinion? (Prov. 2:6)
According to James 1:5, why should we ask Jehovah for help?
Ask Jehovah to help you understand his viewpoint. He promises to give wisdom “generously to all and without reproach” (read James 1:5). That wisdom will enable us to discern whether a certain decision will please him or not.
