Keep holding fast to the pattern of sound words (2 Tim. 1:13).

What might happen if we stopped clinging to “the pattern of sound words”? Consider something that occurred in the first century. Some Christians were spreading the rumor that Jehovah’s day had already arrived. There may have been a letter claiming this, supposedly written by the apostle Paul. Without bothering to check the facts, some Christians in Thessalonica believed the rumor and even repeated it. They would not have been deceived if they had remembered the things Paul had taught them while he was still with them (2 Thess. 2:1-5). The apostle counseled them not to believe everything they heard. And, so that they would not fall into the same trap again, he ended his second letter to them with these words: “I, Paul, am writing this greeting with my own hand, which is a sign in all my letters. This is how I write” (2 Thess. 3:17). w24.07 12 pars. 13, 14

What is the “model of healthy words”, and what should we do with it?

“Keep holding fast to the pattern of sound words” (2 Tim. 1:13). What is the “pattern of sound words”? It is the Christian teaching found in the Bible (John 17:17). These teachings are the foundation of all our beliefs. Jehovah’s organization has taught us to closely follow this pattern. If we always do, we will prosper.

How can we protect ourselves from lies disguised as truths? Give an example.

What can we learn from Paul’s writings to the Thessalonians? If we hear a shocking story or something that doesn’t agree with what we’ve learned from the Bible, we should be discerning. In the former Soviet Union, our enemies circulated a letter—supposedly from world headquarters—encouraging some brothers to form an independent organization. Although the letter appeared to be authentic, faithful brothers did not fall for it. They realized that what it said didn’t fit with what they had learned. Today, enemies of the truth sometimes use technology to confuse and divide us. We can protect ourselves from “easily losing our senses” by making sure that what we hear or read is in harmony with the truths we already know. (2 Thess. 2:2; 1 John 4:1)

According to Romans 16:17, 18, what should we do with those who stray from the truth?

Stay united with those who are loyal to Jehovah. God wants all of us brothers and sisters to worship him together, and we can do that only by holding fast to the truth. Those who stray from the truth create divisions within the congregation. That is why God tells us to avoid them, so that they do not lead us astray from the truth. (Read Romans 16:17, 18.)

What will happen if we acknowledge the truth and hold on to it?

If we recognize the truth and hold fast to it, we will be spiritually safe and sound (Eph. 4:15, 16). We will not be deceived by Satan’s lies and false teachings, and we will have Jehovah’s protection during the great tribulation. Hold fast to the truth, and “the God of peace” will be with you (Phil. 4:8, 9).
