“You are very valuable” (DAN. 9:23).
1, 2. What will help us to be convinced that we are very valuable to Jehovah?
One thing that will help us realize how precious we are to Jehovah is analyzing Bible accounts that show how he wants us to treat one another. One example is the way his Son, Jesus, treated people with dignity and respect. In this way, he demonstrated that both Jesus and his Father highly value humble people who feel insignificant.
HOW JESUS HELPED PEOPLE SEE THEIR VALUABLENESS
3. How did Jesus treat the people from Galilee who came to him?
Jesus treated the people of Galilee who came to him with great dignity, dedicating time to teaching and healing them. He saw that they were “mistreated and abandoned like sheep without a shepherd,” since the religious leaders considered them too ignorant and insignificant, even calling them “cursed people.”
Furthermore, with the desire to help more people, he empowered his apostles to preach and gave them authority to heal all kinds of diseases.
4. What do we learn from the way Jesus treated humble people?
The way Jesus treated humble people teaches us that both he and his Father highly value those whom the world often despises. When we feel worthless, we should remember how Jesus treated those who were humble and wanted to learn from him. This will help us see how much Jehovah cares about us.
5. What was wrong with the woman Jesus met in Galilee?
The woman Jesus met in Galilee had suffered from bleeding for 12 years, which made her ceremonially unclean. Therefore, anyone who touched her would become unclean, so she likely spent very little time with other people. Furthermore, because of this condition, she could not worship Jehovah with the rest of the people in the synagogue or at festivals.
6. How was the woman who was suffering from hemorrhages cured?
This woman had a very strong faith that Jesus could heal her, but she didn't ask him directly, perhaps because she felt very ashamed of her illness or was afraid that Jesus would reprimand her for going out among the people while unclean. So she simply touched Jesus's clothes, and her illness disappeared.
7. How did Jesus treat that woman? (Mark 5:34).
When Jesus realized that the woman was “trembling with fear,” he spoke to her with great affection, consideration, and respect, even calling her “daughter.” This was not out of mere courtesy, but as a sign of tenderness and closeness.
If Jesus hadn't spoken to her with such kindness, she would have been cured of her illness, but perhaps she would have been left with overwhelming feelings of guilt. By not only restoring her health, Jesus also helped her see a very important truth: that her Father in heaven loved her very much.
8. What difficulties did a sister from Brazil face?
A regular pioneer sister from Brazil, named Renata, was born without legs and without her left hand due to a genetic condition. She says that at school she was constantly bullied and mocked with cruel nicknames. Even her own family members sometimes treated her with prejudice.
9. What helped Renata feel very valuable?
Renata found it very valuable that, when she became one of Jehovah's Witnesses, the brothers and sisters in her congregation lovingly encouraged her and helped her to see herself as Jehovah sees her. Thanks to all that affection and everything they did for her, Renata understood that she is very precious in Jehovah's eyes.
10. What terrible situation was Mary Magdalene in? (See also the images).
Mary Magdalene was possessed by seven demons, which likely caused her to behave in strange ways. This may explain why others avoided her and why she felt marginalized, helpless, and afraid. Apparently, Jesus freed her from these demons, and she began to follow him in faith. In this way, Jesus helped her see her immense value in God's eyes.
ILLUSTRATION
Series of images: 1. Jesus notices Mary Magdalene, who is weeping on her knees in a dark alley. 2. Mary Magdalene happily accompanies Jesus and the other disciples.
In what ways did Jesus help Mary Magdalene see how much she was valued in God's eyes? (See paragraphs 10 and 11.)
11. How did Jesus make it clear to Mary Magdalene how much Jehovah appreciated her? (See also the pictures.)
Jesus made it clear to Mary Magdalene how much Jehovah valued her by inviting her to accompany him on his preaching tours, giving her the privilege of hearing his teachings firsthand. Furthermore, Jesus appeared to her on the day of his resurrection, making her one of the first people he spoke to, and then instructed her to tell the apostles that he had risen.
12. Why did Lydia feel rejected?
Lidia felt rejected because, when her mother was pregnant with her, she considered having an abortion; although she ultimately decided against it, Lidia remembers that, from a very young age, her mother never took care of her and said very cruel things to her. She says that all she wanted in life was for others to accept and love her, but she was afraid she wouldn't achieve it because her mother had convinced her that she was a bad person and didn't deserve it.
13. What helped Lydia to understand how valuable she is in Jehovah’s eyes?
Lidia came to understand her great value in Jehovah's eyes when she learned the truth. Through prayer, Bible reading, and the affection of her brothers and sisters, she received the help she needed to be convinced of her worth to Jehovah. In addition, she was also helped by the frequent recognition of her husband for her good qualities and by the praise of dear friends.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO SEE YOURSELF AS JEHOVAH SEES YOU
14. What does 1 Samuel 16:7 teach us about Jehovah’s viewpoint? (See also the box “Why Does Jehovah Value His Servants So Much?”)
1 Samuel 16:7 teaches us that, unlike people, Jehovah does not value physical appearance, social standing, or level of education. So, when we think about our worth, we should consider the same things that Jehovah values.
One thing that will help us is to read Bible accounts of people who had low self-esteem, such as Elijah, Naomi, and Hannah, and pay attention to how Jehovah showed that he valued them. We can also write down times in our own lives when we have seen that Jehovah loves and deeply appreciates us.
15. Why did Jehovah tell Daniel, “You are very valuable”? (Daniel 9:23).
Jehovah sent the angel Gabriel to tell Daniel, who was nearly 100 years old and felt very tired and discouraged: “You are very valuable,” because he valued the many qualities he had, such as his love for justice and his faithfulness.
This teaches us that Jehovah hears our prayers and that, like Daniel, he values us because we love doing what is right and serve him faithfully. Furthermore, he had this account written in his Word to comfort us.
16. What can help you to see Jehovah as a loving father?
Meditating on the fact that Jehovah doesn't focus on finding fault with us, but rather wants to help us, will help us see him as a loving Father. In this way, many who struggle with low self-esteem come to understand how much they value Jehovah. Furthermore, by allowing us to be instruments for teaching others, he shows us that he certainly considers us very useful and valuable.
17. What can convince you that you have Jehovah’s approval? (Psalm 5:12; see also the picture.)
Meditating on his Word, which confirms his love for us, will help us to be convinced that we have Jehovah’s approval. Furthermore, through elders, friends, and other brothers and sisters, he reminds us how precious we are to him.
Being convinced that we have God's favor and support, as David said, is like "a great shield" that will protect us when doubts about our worth as people assail us.
ILLUSTRATION
Two sisters leave the Kingdom Hall smiling to go preaching together; one has her arm around the other's shoulder.
Knowing that we have Jehovah’s approval helps us to fight against low self-esteem. (See paragraph 17.)
18. Why should you accept the words of encouragement that are given to you?
Because we must keep in mind that Jehovah may be using these expressions of encouragement to confirm that we have his approval. For this reason, if people who know and care about us say positive things about us, we should not dismiss them as untrue.
Sister Eliana understood that Jehovah wants her to accept the words of encouragement she receives, and although it is difficult for her, she is learning to believe them. Furthermore, the affection she receives from the elders has helped her, and now she is a pioneer and serves as a remote volunteer for Bethel.
19. Why can you be sure that you are of great value to Jehovah?
We can be sure that we are of great value to Jehovah by meditating on how Jesus tenderly taught us how much we matter to his heavenly Father. In this way, we can be convinced of our worth in Jehovah's eyes; moreover, we should do all we can to help others know how precious they are in God's eyes.
WHAT WOULD YOU ANSWER?
How did Jesus help people see that they were valuable in God's eyes?
Jesus helped people see their worth in God's eyes by treating with kindness and respect those whom the world often despises. In this way, Jesus showed that both he and his Father value them.
How did Jesus help the woman who was suffering from hemorrhages?
Jesus helped the woman who was suffering from hemorrhaging. When, far from scolding her, he realized she was “trembling with fear,” he spoke to her with great affection, consideration, and respect, calling her “daughter,” a clear sign of closeness and tenderness. In this way, Jesus not only restored her health but also showed her an absolute truth: that her Father in heaven loved her very much.
What can we do to see ourselves as Jehovah sees us?
We must remember that Jehovah's viewpoint is different from that of people in the world. We must not forget that Jehovah considers us very valuable because of our faithfulness. We should try to see him as a loving Father and convince ourselves that we have his approval.
