Analysis of Lesson 42: Jonathan is brave and loyal

How did Jonathan show that he was brave?

Jonathan showed courage when he decided to go up with his armor-bearer to attack the Philistines, even though he knew they were many and he only had one assistant. He did not act rashly: first he asked for a sign from the Lord, and upon receiving it, he advanced with determination and defeated 20 Philistine soldiers.

How did Jonathan show that he was loyal?

Jonathan showed his loyalty when he humbly accepted that Jehovah had chosen David as the future king, without feeling envy even though he was the natural heir.

He proved his loyalty by being a true friend, giving David some of his own belongings (his tunic, sword, bow, and belt) as a show of support. He defended him before Saul even knowing it could put his own life at risk, and he also encouraged him when David was fleeing, reminding him that the Lord was with him.

What does this account teach us about Jehovah?

This account teaches that Jehovah supports those who trust in him and act in faith, like Jonathan. It also shows that Jehovah fulfills his purposes—in this case, choosing David as king—and blesses those who are loyal and faithful to his will. Jehovah is a God who values sincere friendship, humility, and courage.

What practical lessons can we learn?

We can learn to be courageous with Jehovah’s help: like Jonathan, we can face challenges by trusting in God’s guidance. We also learn to humbly accept Jehovah’s will: although Jonathan could have felt jealous, he showed humility by recognizing God’s choice.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS

We learn to demonstrate true loyalty: loyalty involves supporting and protecting our friends, even in difficult situations. We also learn to value and maintain our friendships: just as David never forgot Jonathan, we too must cherish those who have shown us love and loyalty.

We learn to be good friends: true friendship is shown through actions, generosity, support and defense, just like that of Jonathan and David.

Analysis of Lesson 42: The Sin of King David

What was David's sin?

David's sin was committing adultery with Bathsheba, Uriah's wife, and then indirectly plotting Uriah's death to cover up what he had done. Although he tried to conceal his wrongdoing, Jehovah saw his actions and confronted him through the prophet Nathan.

How did David help his son Solomon?

David helped Solomon by preparing everything necessary for the construction of the temple that Jehovah had assigned him. He gathered large quantities of gold, silver, and other valuable materials. He also obtained cedar wood from Tyre and Sidon and sought out skilled workers for the project.

Furthermore, he donated much of his own resources, gave Solomon the plans and instructions that Jehovah had given, and encouraged him by saying that Jehovah would be with him and that he should be strong and courageous.
