Through God we will have strength (Psalm 108:13).
What can you do to strengthen your hope? If you have the hope of living forever on earth, read what the Bible says about Paradise and picture yourself there (Isa. 25:8; 32:16-18). Think about what life will be like in the new world. If we make it a habit to think about what life will be like there, difficulties will seem “momentary and light” (2 Cor. 4:17).
The hope that Jehovah gives us will make us strong. He has already given us everything we need to be strong. So when you find it difficult to fulfill a responsibility, endure a trial, or continue serving Jehovah joyfully, pray to him sincerely and study the Bible so that he can guide you. Also, accept the help of your brothers and sisters and keep your hope alive. Then Jehovah “by means of his glorious power” will strengthen you “with all the power needed to endure everything with patience and happiness.” (Col. 1:11)
Why did the apostle Paul need strength?
Paul needed strength. In his letter to the Corinthians, he said he was as fragile as a clay pot. He recounted how he had been oppressed, persecuted, and struck down, and how he had wavered. There were even times when he was close to losing his life (2 Cor. 4:8-10). He wrote all this on his third missionary journey. He probably didn't know at that time that more difficulties lay ahead. Later, a violent mob would attack him, he would be arrested, his ship would be wrecked, and he would end up in prison.
According to 2 Corinthians 4:16-18, what gave Paul the strength to endure the trials?
What gave Paul the strength to endure? Focusing on his hope (read 2 Corinthians 4:16-18). He told the brothers in Corinth that although his body was “wasting away,” his spirit was undiminished. He focused on the life he would have in the future. For him, the heavenly hope was very special, “of ever-increasing greatness.” And he was willing to endure anything to gain the reward. Paul meditated on that hope, and as a result, he felt that he was “being renewed day by day.”
How does hope strengthen Tijomir and his family?
Hope is what gives strength to a brother in Bulgaria named Tijomir. A few years ago, his younger brother, Zdravko, died in a traffic accident. Tijomir was devastated. What has helped him and his family cope with this grief? Thinking about what the resurrection will be like. He explains: “For example, we talk about where we will welcome Zdravko, what food we will prepare for him, who we will invite to his homecoming party, and what details of the last days we will tell him.” Tijomir says that focusing on hope gives his family the strength to keep enduring and waiting for Jehovah to resurrect his brother.
