“The God of all undeserved kindness [...] will establish you, he will make you strong, he will set you on a firm foundation” (1 Pet. 5:10).

1. Why do we need to endure, but what help do we have? (1 Peter 5:10)

WE LIVE in difficult times, and we all face challenges. Some suffer from a chronic illness, others have suffered the loss of a loved one, and others face opposition from family members or even governments. (Matt. 10:18, 36, 37). There is no doubt that we need to endure, and we can be sure that Jehovah will help all his servants, including you, to achieve this. (it’s 1 Peter 5:10).

2. How do we Christians endure?

2 To endure means to be able to persevere without losing hope despite obstacles, persecution, problems, and temptations. How do we Christians endure? It is not by our own strength, but thanks to Jehovah, who gives us “power beyond what is normal.” (2 Cor. 4:7) In this article, we'll look at four ways Jehovah has helped us endure and how to make the most of each one.

THE PRAYER

3. Why do we say that being able to communicate with Jehovah is a true miracle?

3 Jehovah has given us extraordinary help in endurance. Even though we are sinners, he has made it possible for us to communicate with him. (Heb. 4:16) Consider what that means: We can talk to Jehovah at any time, on any subject, in any language, and in any place, even if we are isolated or in prison. (John 2:1, 2; Acts 16:25, 26). He is able to understand us even when anxiety does not allow us to clearly express what we want to tell him. (Rom. 8:26, 27) Isn’t it a miracle to be able to communicate with Jehovah?

4. Why is it right to ask Jehovah for help in enduring?

4 In his Word, Jehovah assures us that “we can ask him anything that is in accordance with his will, and he hears us” (1 John 5:14). So, is it right for us to ask him for help in enduring? Yes, because it is in accordance with his will. How do we know? Because the Bible says that when we endure trials, Jehovah can respond to Satan's challenge (Prov. 27:11). It also says that he is eager "to show his strength on behalf of those who serve him with a whole heart." (2 Chron. 16:9) So we can be confident that Jehovah is willing and able to help us endure. (Isa. 30:18; 41:10; Luke 11:13)

5. How does prayer help us achieve peace of mind? (Isaiah 26:3)

5 The Bible encourages Christians to pray about their concerns, and thus “the peace of God, which is beyond human understanding, will guard your hearts and minds.” (Phil. 4:7) How grateful we are! People who do not serve Jehovah try many things to try to forget their problems and achieve some peace of mind. For example, some practice a type of meditation that consists of emptying the mind of all thoughts, including worries. But leaving the mind blank is very dangerous, because it exposes oneself to the influence of demons (compare Matthew 12:43-45). Furthermore, the calm these people may feel is nothing compared to the peace God gives us when we pray to him. We trust completely in Jehovah, and he protects our minds and hearts by giving us “steadfast peace.” (read Isaiah 26:3). How does He do this? One way is by reminding us of biblical texts that show how much He loves us and wants to help us. (Ps. 62:1, 2).

6. How can we get the most out of prayer? (See also the image.)

6 How to make the most of this help. When we go through a difficult situation, let us pray to Jehovah to cast our burden upon him and ask him for peace and wisdom to know how to act. (Sal. 55:22; Prov. 2:10, 11). In addition to begging Him to help us endure, let us not forget to thank Him. (Phil. 4:6). Let us be attentive to how He helps us during our trials and thank Him for His support. Let us not allow our problems to blind us to the blessings He gives us. (Ps. 16:5, 6).

ILLUSTRATION

An older brother sits in his home praying during the winter. He has an open Bible on his lap and a bottle of medicine on a table next to him.

When we pray, we speak to Jehovah; when we read the Bible, Jehovah speaks to us. (See paragraph 6.)

THE BIBLE

7. How does Bible study help us endure?

7 Jehovah has given us his Word to help us endure. In it we find many passages that confirm that we have Jehovah's support. Let's look at an example. Matthew 6:8 says, "Your Father knows what you need even before you ask him." These words were spoken by Jesus, and he knows Jehovah better than anyone. So when we suffer, there is no reason to doubt that Jehovah knows what we need and will support us. The Bible is full of beautiful promises that give us the strength to endure. (Ps. 94:19).

8. a) Give an example of a biblical principle that helps us endure. b) What will help us remember Bible principles when we need them?

8 The Bible also contains principles that help us endure. These principles teach us very wise lessons that enable us to make good decisions (Prov. 2:6, 7). For example, the Bible encourages us not to obsess over what might happen in the future, but to focus on the problems of each day (Matt. 6:34). If we make it a habit to read and meditate on it, we will be more likely to remember the principles appropriate for the situation we are going through.

9. What effect does meditating on biblical stories have on us?

9 The Bible also includes true stories of ordinary people who trusted in Jehovah and received his support. (Heb. 11:32-34; Jas. 5:17) When we meditate on these accounts, our confidence is strengthened that Jehovah is also “our refuge and our strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble.” (Ps. 46:1). If we look at the faith and endurance of God's servants of the past, we will be encouraged to imitate their example. (James 5:10, 11).

10. How can we get the most out of the Bible?

10 How to make the most of this help. Let's read the Bible every day and make a list of verses that we find especially helpful. Many brothers and sisters also read the daily text every morning because they feel it gives them a boost of encouragement for the whole day. That's what a sister named Marie experienced. Her parents were diagnosed with cancer at the same time, and she had to care for both of them during their final months. Marie shares what gave her the strength to endure: “Every morning I made it my habit to read the passage from the Bible Study and meditate on it. This helped me focus on Jehovah and the wonderful teachings of his Word, and to not think only about the difficult situation I was experiencing.” (Ps. 61:2)

OUR BROTHERS

11. Why does it encourage us to know that our brothers endure their trials?

11 Jehovah gives us a worldwide brotherhood to help us endure. It comforts us to know that “the whole brotherhood in the world is undergoing the same sufferings.” (1 Pet. 5:9) Why? Because, seeing that they face situations similar to ours and manage to endure, we are sure that we too can endure our own trials, whatever they may be. (Num. 14:22).

12. What can we do for one another? (2 Corinthians 1:3, 4)

12 Our brothers can also encourage us in practical ways. The apostle Paul found this helpful himself. While he was under house arrest, several brothers helped him in various ways, and in his letters, he mentioned them by name and thanked them for their comfort and encouragement. (Phil. 2:25, 29, 30; Col. 4:10, 11) Today, our brothers and sisters are also at our side to help us endure, and we can do the same for them when they need it. (it’s 2 Corinthians 1:3, 4).

13. What helped a sister named Maya endure?

Let's look at the case of a sister from Russia named Maya. In 2020, security agents entered her home and searched it. Maya was later taken to court for sharing her faith with others. How did the brothers help her? She said: “On one occasion when I felt like I couldn’t take it anymore, they called me, wrote to me, and told me they loved me very much.” And she added: “I've always known I was part of a large, loving family, but since 2020, I've seen it clearly because I've experienced it firsthand.”

14. How can we make the most of our siblings' help? (See also the image.)

14 How to make the most of this help. When we go through difficulties, let us stay close to our spiritual family. Let us remember that we can always ask for help from the elderly, who are "a refuge from the wind, a shelter from the rainstorm." (Isa. 32:2). On the other hand, let us not forget that our brothers and sisters also face difficulties. If we do something good for someone in need, it will be easier for us to maintain a balanced and positive attitude and endure our own trials (Acts 20:35).

ILLUSTRATION

The older brother in the previous image sits in his house in spring. He's smiling and chatting with two little girls and their parents. Next to his cane are a few bottles of medicine. One of the girls shows him a drawing she made of Paradise.

Let us stay close to our spiritual family. (See paragraph 14.)

OUR HOPE

15. How did hope help Jesus, and how does it help us? (Hebrews 12:2)

15 Jehovah has given us a sure hope to help us endure. (Rom. 15:13) Recall that Jesus endured the most difficult day of his life on earth because of the hope he had. (Read Hebrews 12:2.) He knew that if he remained faithful, he would contribute to the vindication of Jehovah's name. He also longed to be reunited with his Father in heaven and to begin ruling there with his anointed brothers. Similarly, the hope we have of living forever in God's new world helps us endure any difficulties we face in Satan's world.

16. How did hope help a sister, and what do you learn from what she says?

16 Let us look at how the hope of the new world gave strength to a sister from Russia named Alla. When her husband was arrested and remanded in custody, she said, “What keeps me from getting discouraged is praying and meditating on the wonderful future that awaits us. I know these trials will come to an end. Jehovah will be victorious, and so will we.”

17. How do we show that we value our hope? (See also the image.)

17 How to make the most of this help. Let us take time to reflect on the wonderful future Jehovah has promised us. Let us imagine ourselves in the new world enjoying the blessings we will receive. As we do so, the trials we are now facing will seem “momentary and light.” (2 Cor. 4:17). Let us also do as much as we can to share our faith with other people. Can you imagine how difficult it must be for them to deal with Satan's world without knowing God's purpose for the future? A simple conversation may be enough to spark their interest in Jehovah's promises.

ILLUSTRATION

The older brother sits at home in the fall. He thinks about the picture of Paradise open on his tablet. Next to him are a walker and several bottles of medication.

Let us take time to think about the wonderful future Jehovah has promised us. (See paragraph 17.)

18. Why can we trust Jehovah’s promises?

18 After faithfully enduring many trials, Job said to Jehovah, “Now I know that you can do anything and that nothing you set your mind to is impossible for you.” (Job 42:2). Job understood that nothing can prevent Jehovah from fulfilling his promises. Understanding this gives us strength to endure. To illustrate, let's imagine a woman who is very ill and discouraged because she has been to many doctors, but none have been able to help her. One day, she meets an experienced doctor who discovers what is wrong with her and explains how he will treat her illness. Although she is still sick, she feels relieved, and it becomes easier to endure because she now has hope: she knows she will recover. Similarly, we have the strength to continue enduring because we are certain that Paradise will soon be a reality.

19. What do we need to endure?

19 As we have seen, to help us endure, Jehovah has given us prayer, the Bible, our fellowship, and our hope. If we strive to make the most of these gifts, Jehovah will help us face every difficulty until the day comes when Satan’s world and its problems are finally no more. (Phil. 4:13)

EXPLAIN HOW THE FOLLOWING GIFTS FROM JEHOVAH HELP US TO ENDURE:

Prayer and the Bible

Prayer helps us endure because “the peace of God, which is beyond human understanding, will guard your hearts and minds.” We trust completely in Jehovah, and he protects our minds and hearts by giving us “steadfast peace.” He does this, for example, by reminding us of Bible passages that show how much he loves us and wants to help us.

The Bible helps us endure because it contains many passages that confirm that we have Jehovah's support. This way, we know there's no reason to doubt that Jehovah knows what we need and will support us. The Bible is full of beautiful promises that give us strength to endure.

Our brothers

It helps to know that Jehovah gives us a worldwide brotherhood to help us endure. Knowing that “the whole brotherhood throughout the world is undergoing the same sufferings” comforts us, because seeing them face similar situations and endure, we have the assurance that we too can endure our own trials, whatever they may be.

Our hope

Just as Jesus was helped by the hope that if he remained faithful, he would contribute to the vindication of Jehovah's name, be reunited with his Father in heaven, and eventually begin to rule there with his anointed brothers, so the hope we have of living forever in God's new world helps us endure whatever difficulties we face in Satan's world.
