Jehovah gives us stability in difficult times (15 mins.) Analysis with the audience.
Read 2 Corinthians 4:7-9. Then ask:
Why should we strive to continue our basic Christian activities even when it's hard?
Because this is the means by which Jehovah will give us power beyond the ordinary to overcome obstacles, whether through a speech, a comment from our brothers, or the pleasant company of our preaching partner. Jehovah will not abandon us if we stay close to Him.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
Although sometimes the challenges are so overwhelming that we don't feel like doing anything, continuing with our Christian activities—such as praying, reading the Bible, or attending meetings—is what helps us most to stay strong. These are the things that draw us closer to Jehovah and give us strength when we feel we can't go on. If we stop doing them, it's like letting go of Jehovah's hand just when we need him most.
When we continue to do spiritual things, even when it's difficult, we show that we trust in Jehovah. He sees our efforts and gives us the peace and strength we need to endure difficult times.
If we neglect our spiritual pursuits, we are more likely to feel weak or hopeless. However, when we stay close to Jehovah, He gives us stability and helps us think calmly, even in the midst of trouble.
Play the video Gary and Beth Septer: “Jehovah is near to the brokenhearted.” Then ask:
How did Jehovah help Gary and Beth?
Jehovah cared for them and gave them wisdom to make the best decisions, such as choosing the best medical treatment for their son. He gave them the strength that only Jehovah can provide when they felt they could go on.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
Jehovah helped them by giving them peace and strength to carry on after losing their son. Although the pain was great, they felt that Jehovah was very close to them through prayer and reading the Bible. Over time, they understood that Jehovah had never abandoned them and that He can heal a broken heart.
This teaches us that Jehovah doesn't always take away suffering, but he does give us the strength to endure it. His help is felt in the most difficult moments, when we feel calm or courageous without knowing exactly where it comes from.
Gary and Beth also learned that Jehovah is always close to those with broken hearts. This helped them trust Him more and strengthen their faith, even in the midst of pain.
How did the brothers help them?
The brothers helped them with encouraging words; they brought them food and spent time with them. They visited them in the hospital and recorded their talks so they could be nourished spiritually and strengthened.
And after their son's death, the brothers were there to be a source of comfort and to grieve together, because they too had lost a child in the congregation. How comforting that was for Gary and Beth.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
The brothers were very attentive to them. They visited them, prayed with them, and listened to them when they needed to vent. This affection and support made them feel Jehovah's love in practice, and this gave them great comfort and encouragement to continue.
Sometimes we think that others cannot understand what we feel, but the sincere love of our brothers shows that Jehovah cares for us and uses his people to give us comfort.
Gary and Beth also learned that accepting help isn't a sign of weakness; rather, it demonstrates humility and confidence that Jehovah can strengthen us through others.
What else do we learn from this marriage?
We learn that life can change overnight, but that abandoning Jehovah is not an option. We may face many problems, but the worst decision we could make is to completely leave the organization.
Jehovah will lovingly help us in our difficulties, and he will do so in ways we least expect. How fortunate we are to have a loving Father like Jehovah as God, who can give us wisdom to make the best decisions.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
We learn that even when we go through very painful trials, we must not stray from Jehovah. Gary and Beth continued to trust in Him, and over time they regained peace. Their example shows that if we trust in Jehovah and accept the help of the brothers and sisters, He can give us true comfort.
Their example teaches us that no matter how hard the blow, if we trust in Jehovah and seek him every day, he can help us stand firm and give us emotional and spiritual stability.
We also learn that trials can bring us closer to Jehovah. Sometimes, pain teaches us to depend more on Him and value His comfort, which strengthens our faith and our relationship with God.
