You have my approval (Luke 3:22).

How wonderful it is to know that “Jehovah is pleased with his people”! (Ps. 149:4) Yet, at times, some may become discouraged and think, “Jehovah is pleased with his people as a group, but is he pleased with me?” Many of God’s people in the past also struggled at times to believe they had his approval. (1 Sam. 1:6-10; Job 29:2, 4; Ps. 51:11)

The Bible makes it clear that even though we are imperfect, we can receive Jehovah’s approval. What should we do? Show our faith in Jesus Christ and be baptized. (John 3:16) This shows us publicly that we have repented of our sins and have promised God to do his will. (Acts 2:38; 3:19) Jehovah is very happy when we take these steps to become his friend. If we do our best to keep our vow of dedication, Jehovah gives us his approval and friendship. (Ps. 25:14) w24.03 26 pars. 1, 2.

What questions will we answer in this article?

Now, why might some people sometimes think Jehovah doesn't approve of them? In what ways does he show us that he is pleased with us? And what will help us be sure that we have his approval?

What can we be sure of even if we have self-esteem problems?

Many of us have struggled with self-esteem since we were children (Ps. 88:15). A brother named Adrian explains: “I’ve always thought I was worthless. I remember when I was very young, praying to Jehovah for my family to live in Paradise, but I was sure I didn’t deserve to be there.” Tony says this about his upbringing by his parents, who were not Witnesses: “They never told me they were proud of me or that they loved me. They made me feel like I could never live up to their expectations.”

If we sometimes struggle with feelings of inferiority, let's remember that it was Jehovah who brought us to be his people. (John 6:44) He sees the good qualities we have—even though we may not see them—and knows what we are truly like. (1 Sam. 16:7; 2 Chron. 6:30) So when he says we have worth, we can believe him. (1 John 3:19, 20)

What did Paul feel when he thought about his sins?

Some of us may still feel deeply guilty about things we did before we knew the truth. (1 Pet. 4:3) Others may have served Jehovah faithfully for a long time but still struggle with evil tendencies. What about you? Does your heart condemn you? If so, you may find comfort in knowing that other faithful servants of Jehovah have felt the same way. For example, the apostle Paul felt miserable when he thought about his imperfections. (Rom. 7:24) Although he had repented of his sins and been baptized, he still considered himself “the least of the apostles” and “the worst” of sinners. (1 Cor. 15:9; 1 Tim. 1:15)
