Continue walking as children of light (Eph. 5:8).

The Ephesian Christians had begun to live according to the Word of Jehovah, which was like a guiding light (Ps. 119:105). They had left behind false religious practices and immoral behavior. They imitated God and did everything they could to worship and please Him (Eph. 5:1). Similarly, before learning the truth, we were in religious and moral darkness. Some of us may have celebrated false religious festivals, and others may have led immoral lives. But when we came to know Jehovah, we changed our way of life and began to follow his rules about what is right and wrong. That has benefited us in many ways (Is. 48:17). Even so, sometimes it is not easy to stay away from the darkness and continue “walking as children of the light.” w24.03 21 paras. 6, 7.

Why did Paul tell the Ephesians “now you are light”?

However, some Ephesians had come out of all that darkness and that is why Paul told them: “Now you are light in union with the Lord” (Eph. 5:8). They had begun to live according to the Word of Jehovah, which was like a guiding light (Ps. 119:105). They had left behind false religious practices and immoral behavior. They imitated God and did everything they could to worship and please Him (Eph. 5:1).

How is our situation similar to that of the Christians of Ephesus?

Similarly, before learning the truth, we were in religious and moral darkness. Some of us may have celebrated false religious festivals, and others may have led immoral lives. But when we came to know Jehovah, we changed our way of life and began to follow his rules about what is right and wrong. That has benefited us in many ways (Is. 48:17). Even so, sometimes it is not easy to stay away from the darkness and continue “walking as children of the light.” Let's see what will help us achieve it.

According to Ephesians 5:3-5, what did the Ephesians have to avoid?

(Read Ephesians 5:3-5). In order to stay as far away from moral darkness as possible, the Ephesian Christians had to continue to reject practices that were displeasing to Jehovah. This not only included sexual immorality, but also obscene words. Paul reminded them that they had to avoid all of these things if they wanted to inherit “the Kingdom of Christ and of God.”

Why should we avoid any contact with immoral things?

We too must be very careful not to do anything that would lead us to “participate in the unfruitful works of darkness” (Eph. 5:11). It is more than proven that when a person continues to watch, listen to, or talk about dirty and immoral things, he will most likely end up committing a sin (Gen. 3:6; James 1:14, 15). For example, in a certain country a large number of Witnesses created a group to send messages to each other on a social network. At first, many of them talked about spiritual things. But little by little the conversations began to go the other way, until there came a point where they almost only talked about sex. Later, many admitted that those dirty conversations led them to fall into sexual immorality.
