ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
Explaining a biblical text: Jesus used his time to prepare his disciples for the future. As John 13:15 says, he left them an example to follow. Thus, he taught not only with words, but with actions that reinforced his teaching.
This period shows that even in critical situations, we can take time to strengthen and empower those who depend on us spiritually.
HOW TO ENCOURAGE OTHERS
5. Why did Jesus' disciples need encouragement?
The disciples had sacrificed much to follow Jesus. His execution left them heartbroken, as they felt the Messiah had failed (Matthew 19:27; John 9:22).
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
In Matthew 16:16, Peter acknowledged that Jesus was the Christ. However, his death seemed to contradict that hope. This teaches us that even those with strong faith may need encouragement in times of trial.

7. What did Jesus see Mary doing, and what did He do for her? (John 20:11-16; see also image.)
Jesus saw Mary crying and appeared to her. He encouraged her by speaking kindly to her and gave her an important task: to announce his resurrection to the other disciples (John 20:17, 18).
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
In John 20:11-16, Jesus showed empathy by addressing Mary by name. This personal act not only comforted her, but restored her purpose and joy by assigning her spiritual responsibility.
Jesus' example teaches us to show genuine empathy, pay attention to the emotional needs of others, and give them a sense of value by including them in important tasks.
ILLUSTRATION
The risen Jesus speaks to Mary Magdalene outside an empty tomb. Let us imitate Jesus by being observant and empathetic toward those who are discouraged. (See paragraph 7.)
8. How can we imitate Jesus?
To the point: We can imitate Jesus by encouraging our brothers with empathy, taking an interest in their difficulties and reminding them how much they are worth to Jehovah.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
Romans 12:15 encourages us to “rejoice with those who rejoice and mourn with those who mourn.” Just as Jesus showed empathy for his disciples, we can comfort and encourage those facing trials.
Attentive listening and genuine love may be just what someone needs to regain the desire to press on in Jehovah’s service.
HOW TO HELP OTHERS UNDERSTAND THE SCRIPTURES BETTER
9. What were the disciples lacking, and how did Jesus help them?
The disciples needed to better understand the Scriptures. Jesus helped them by explaining the meaning of the texts and clarifying their doubts, as he did with the disciples on the road to Emmaus.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
Luke 24:27 says that Jesus “beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.” This method allowed them to connect the facts with Bible prophecies.
This reminds us of the importance of helping others understand the Bible step by step, showing patience and using the Scriptures in a clear and logical way.
10. How did Jesus convince his disciples that he was the Messiah? (Luke 24:18-27)
Jesus asked questions that allowed the disciples to express their feelings. Then he used Scripture to show them how the prophecies about the Messiah had been fulfilled in him (Luke 24:18-27).
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
In Luke 24:26, Jesus asked them if it was not necessary for the Christ to suffer before entering into his glory. This helped the disciples connect what happened with the prophecies and understand the purpose of his death and resurrection.
Jesus' method teaches us to listen carefully before offering answers. By understanding the thoughts and feelings of others, we can use the Bible more effectively to strengthen their faith.
11, 12. (a) What lessons can we learn from the way Jesus used Scripture? (See also images.)
Jesus used Scripture to help others reason and find answers for themselves, rather than simply telling them what to do.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
Explaining a biblical text: Proverbs 20:5 highlights that “a man’s thoughts are like deep waters, but a man of understanding knows how to draw out of them.” Thus, Jesus asked questions that helped his disciples reflect and apply biblical principles.
When we teach others, guiding them to discover answers in the Bible strengthens their faith and prepares them to meet challenges with sound principles.
11, 12. b) How did Nortey's Bible teacher help him?
Nortey’s Bible teacher helped him by teaching him texts like Matthew 10, which prepared him to face family opposition, and helped him reason using biblical principles to make mature decisions.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
In Matthew 10:16, Jesus advised his disciples to be “cautious as serpents and innocent as doves.” This principle was key for Nortey, who applied it when he explained his beliefs tactfully and respectfully to his family, demonstrating Christian wisdom and maturity.
Nortey’s experience shows that spiritual support and biblical reasoning strengthen faith, especially in times of trial. This example reminds us of the importance of preparing new students to face opposition, just as Jesus prepared his disciples.
ILLUSTRATION
Series of images: 1. During a class, a brother helps his student reason using the Bible. 2. The man throws away his Christmas decorations. Let us imitate Jesus by helping others reason using the Scriptures. (See paragraph 11.)
HOW TO TRAIN BROTHERS TO BECOME LIKE A GIFT
13. What did Jesus do to ensure that the preaching continued after he returned to heaven? (Ephesians 4:8)
Jesus trained his disciples and delegated to them the responsibility of preaching, trusting that they would accomplish the work of making disciples.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
Ephesians 4:8 mentions that Jesus “gave gifts in the form of men.” This shows that His trust in the disciples included preparing them to lead and care for the congregation.
This example encourages us to delegate tasks and train others, showing confidence in their abilities and helping them grow spiritually.
14. How did Jesus help his disciples grow spiritually during the last 40 days he was on Earth? (See also image.)
Jesus lovingly corrected his disciples' doubts and misconceptions and helped them focus on Kingdom priorities.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
In John 21:15, Jesus asks Peter, “Do you love me more than these?” This direct advice reminded Peter of the importance of focusing on caring for Jehovah’s sheep rather than other interests.
Spiritual leaders can follow this example by lovingly correcting and helping others focus on what is truly important in their service to Jehovah.
ILLUSTRATION
Jesus speaks to his disciples on the seashore while they are roasting fish on the embers. Let us imitate Jesus by helping our brothers take on more responsibilities. (See paragraph 14.)
15, 16. (a) In what ways can the elderly imitate Jesus?
The elderly can imitate Jesus by training their brothers, especially the younger ones, with patience and love, so that they can take on more responsibilities.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
2 Timothy 2:2 says that what we learn should be “entrusted to faithful men who will be qualified to teach others.” Elders can teach and delegate wisely.
When correcting or training, it is important to value the efforts of the brothers and encourage them to grow, as Jesus did with his disciples.
15, 16. b) How did the advice given to Patrick help him?
Kind and direct advice from an elder helped Patrick change his attitude, focusing on humbly serving rather than seeking responsibility, which contributed to his being named a young elder.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
Proverbs 27:9 says, “Oil and incense rejoice the heart, and sweet counsel from a friend comes from the soul.” This text reflects how the elder’s loving, well-directed advice strengthened Patrick, helping him adjust his attitude and develop humility.
Patrick's experience illustrates that timely counsel, given with love and discernment, can change attitudes and motivations. This underscores the importance of mature elders in the congregation, who encourage young people to reach their spiritual potential.
17. How did Jesus show that he trusted his disciples?
Jesus showed confidence in delegating to them the work of preaching and teaching, assuring them that they would be able to carry it out.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
John 20:21 highlights that Jesus said to them: “Just as the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.” This message conveyed confidence and reminded them that Jehovah would support their work.
Delegating responsibilities not only shows trust, but also motivates others to reach their full potential in Jehovah’s service.
18. How can the elderly imitate Jesus?
Elders can imitate Jesus by delegating responsibilities, patiently training others, and showing confidence in their abilities, which strengthens the congregation.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
Philippians 2:19-22 mentions how Paul trusted Timothy for his dedication and willingness to serve. Likewise, elders who delegate tasks to younger people and train them are demonstrating that same trust, helping them grow spiritually and become more useful in the congregation.
Matthew’s example highlights the importance of elders viewing others’ mistakes as learning opportunities, not failures. This attitude fosters an atmosphere of love and support in the congregation, motivating younger people to take on more responsibility with enthusiasm and humility.
19. What decision should we make?
We must imitate Jesus by encouraging, teaching, and empowering others, remembering that he promised to be with us to the end.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
Matthew 28:20 concludes with Jesus’ promise: “I will be with you always, until the end of the system.” This assures us that we will never be alone as we follow His example.
Complementary idea: This determination helps us to be more effective in encouraging and training others, contributing to the strengthening of the congregation and the expansion of the work of the Kingdom.
HOW DID JESUS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE LAST 40 DAYS HE WAS ON EARTH TO DO THE FOLLOWING?
Encourage others.
Jesus encouraged his disciples by strengthening their faith in his resurrection and reminding them of their spiritual worth. He spoke lovingly to them, counseled them, and helped them regain their focus on serving Jehovah rather than worrying about the responsibilities of others. —John 20:27; John 21:15-17.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
In John 20:27, Jesus told Thomas, “Stop doubting and believe.” This direct but loving advice helped Thomas overcome his unbelief and strengthen his faith in the resurrection. Similarly, elders today can encourage brothers to overcome their doubts by speaking with empathy and using Scripture.
Jesus' example shows the importance of listening to others with patience and empathy before giving them advice. This not only encourages them, but also reassures them that they are valuable to Jehovah and his servants.
Help others better understand what the Scriptures said.
Jesus used Scripture to explain to his disciples the prophecies about his death and resurrection. He showed them how everything was written down and helped his disciples grasp the meaning of these truths (Luke 24:25-27).
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
In Luke 24:27, Jesus “beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning Himself.” This method allowed the disciples to connect the prophecies with recent events, strengthening their spiritual understanding and faith in Jehovah.
Jesus not only explained the Scriptures, but he also allowed the disciples to ask questions. This helped them reason and deepen their understanding, which is a valuable example for those who teach the Bible today.
Training men to take on greater responsibilities.
Jesus empowered his disciples by giving them important responsibilities, such as preaching and teaching. He showed them confidence and gave them clear instructions to continue the work after his departure. (Matthew 28:19, 20)
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
In Ephesians 4:8, Paul mentions that Jesus “gave gifts in men,” referring to how he trained and prepared his disciples to lead the preaching work and care for the congregation. This act showed his trust in them and his commitment to the success of Jehovah’s work.
Jesus lovingly corrected his disciples’ mistakes during this time. For example, he helped them correct their approach to the Kingdom (Acts 1:6-8). This shows the importance of training that includes clear advice and constant support.
