You do well to pay attention to him (2 Pet. 1:19).

We have good reason to be interested in how world events are fulfilling the prophecies of the Bible. For example, Jesus mentioned several events that help us know that the end of Satan's system is near (Matt. 24:3-14). And the apostle Peter also encourages us to pay attention to the fulfillment of Bible prophecies so that our faith remains strong (2 Pet. 1:20, 21). He wants us to maintain a balanced view when analyzing Bible prophecies. He encourages us to “keep an eye on the presence of the day of the Lord” (2 Pet. 3:11-13). Because? It is not because we want to discover “the day and hour” when Jehovah will bring Armageddon, but rather because we want to use the remaining time to “perform holy acts of conduct and deeds of devotion to God” (Matt. 24:36; Luke 12:40). We want to be on our best behavior and ensure that everything we do for Jehovah is motivated by our deep love for him. To achieve this, we must monitor ourselves. w23.02 16 paras. 4, 6.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO WATCH OURSELVES?

What do we have to do to monitor ourselves? (Luke 21:34).

Jesus told his disciples to keep an eye not only on world events, but also on themselves. This was made clear in the warning found in Luke 21:34 (read it). Let's look at what Jesus said: “Watch yourselves.” What does it mean to monitor ourselves? Be attentive to all things that could damage our friendship with Jehovah and do everything possible to avoid them. In this way, we will remain in the love of God (Prov. 22:3; Jude 20, 21).

What advice did Paul give to Christians?

The apostle Paul told Christians that they should watch themselves. For example, he wrote to the Ephesian Christians: “Be very careful not to behave like fools, but like wise men” (Eph. 5:15, 16). Satan tries by all means to destroy our spirituality. That is why the Bible advises us to understand “what the will of Jehovah is,” and thus we will be able to resist any attack (Eph. 5:17).

How do we understand what Jehovah's will is for us?

The Bible does not contain a list of all the dangers that threaten our friendship with Jehovah. We often have to make decisions related to matters that are not directly mentioned in it. To decide well, we must understand “what is the will of Jehovah.” How do we do it? Studying the Word of God and meditating on it regularly. The better we understand Jehovah’s will and the more we strive to have “the mind of Christ,” the easier it will be for us to behave “as wise,” even when there is no specific standard telling us what to do. (1 Cor. 2:14- 16). Of course, some dangers are easy to detect, but there are others that are more subtle.

What are some of the dangers we should avoid?

Some of the dangers we should avoid are flirting, excessive drinking or eating, using hurtful words, as well as watching violent entertainment or pornography (Ps. 101:3). Our adversary, the Devil, is always looking for ways to damage our friendship with Jehovah (1 Pet. 5:8). If we are not careful, he can plant seeds of envy, dishonesty, greed, hatred, pride, and resentment in our minds and hearts (Gal. 5:19-21). They may not be very strong impulses at first. But if we do not uproot them immediately, they will continue to grow until they become a poisonous and harmful plant.—James 1:14, 15.
