Let's Examine the Scriptures Every Day 2022
Sunday November 27
A competent wife oversees her household activities (Prov. 31:27).
God's Word describes the competent wife as a woman who can oversee her house, buy and sell land, and do business (Prov. 31:15, 16, 18). She is not a slave, she has no right to give her opinion. Rather, her husband trusts her and takes her ideas into account (Prov. 31:11, 26). When a man respects her wife in this way, it is a pleasure for her to be under her authority. Despite all that Jesus has accomplished, she does not feel that respecting Jehovah's authority demeans him (1 Cor. 15:28; Phil. 2:5, 6). Likewise, the competent wife who follows Jesus' example does not feel that respecting her husband's authority demeans her. She supports her husband because she loves him, but above all because she loves and respects Jehovah. However, the Christian wife will not support her husband if he asks her to do something that is against the laws or principles of the Bible. w21.02 11 pars. 14, 15; 12 para. 19.
How do we know that Mary had a very close friendship with Jehovah?
Mary had a very close friendship with Jehovah. It was evident that she knew the Scriptures well, for in a conversation with Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist, she quoted from the Hebrew Scriptures more than 20 times (Luke 1:46-55). And think about this: although Mary was engaged to Joseph, the angel of Jehovah did not appear to him first. He earlier spoke directly to Mary and told her that she would give birth to the Son of God (Luke 1:26-33). Jehovah knew Mary well and was sure that she would love and care for her Son. And, without a doubt, Mary continued to have a good friendship with Jehovah even after Jesus died and was taken up to heaven (Acts 1:14).
What can husbands learn from what the Bible says about Mary?
What can husbands learn? The husband who is wise is glad that his wife knows the Scriptures well. He doesn't feel intimidated or threatened by her. He realizes that if his wife is well versed in the Bible and Biblical principles, she can greatly help the family. And, although she has studied more than her husband, it is he who is responsible for family worship and other spiritual activities (Eph. 6: 4).
What can wives learn from Mary?
What can wives learn? The wife must respect the authority of her husband, but she is still responsible for keeping her own faith strong (Gal. 6:5). So she has to set aside time for her personal study and meditation. This will help her to continue to love and respect Jehovah and to be happy under her husband's authority.
How do wives who respect authority benefit themselves, their families, and the congregation?
Wives who respect the authority of their husbands out of love for Jehovah will be happier than those who reject the principle of authority. In addition, they set a good example for the younger men and women, and contribute to a good atmosphere in the family and in the congregation (Titus 2:3-5). Today, most of Jehovah's faithful servants are women (Ps. 68:11). Now, whether we are men or women, we all have an important role to play in the congregation. In the next article we will see how to do it.
