TREASURES OF THE BIBLE, June 20-26, 2022, “Amnon's Selfishness Caused a Tragedy,” Prepared Speech.

“Amnon's selfishness caused a tragedy” (10 mins.)

A few years ago a Christian overseer said: “The world has practically ceased to care about living by a moral code. Chastity is considered old-fashioned.” That is what surrounds us. Personalities of this world such as politics, sports, entertainment. Who openly violate biblical standards of moral conduct. Despite which they are still seen as celebrities. Moreover, some as examples to follow.

And that attitude that surrounds us can be a trap for us to do the same. What can't we do? Sure, we shouldn't, but we can if we want to. And it's not like you can have confidence that we're not going to make those mistakes. Remember that the perfect being Adam failed and the wiser being Solomon also failed. So we too can fail at any time in our lives.

And so we will use as a clear example. Now, in the youth of Amnon. In Bible Treasures, we'll talk about "Amnon's Selfishness Caused a Tragedy." And it is that in this time where there are so many applications to meet other people, to start romantic dates, it is very simple. And young Christians can fall into that, or even have contact or infatuation with another Christian, but expose themselves to serious situations that can lead to committing serious sin.

And how can these things happen? Let's look at the case of Amnon. This young man was very attracted to someone he had known for a long time.

LET'S READ: 2 Samuel 13:1, 2.

And after such things it came to pass that Absalom son of David had a beautiful sister whose name was Tamar, and Amnon son of David fell in love with her. 2 And this had Amnon so distressed that he felt sick because of Tamar her sister, because she was a virgin, and it was hard in Amnon's eyes to do anything to her.

Well, here the situation is very clear. Amnon was Tamara's half brother. They had the same father, in this case King David. This man, Amnon, fell madly in love with her and began to devise a way to conquer her or make her feel attracted or interested for a certain moment until he achieved her goal. As the biblical text clearly says "he became ill", that is, he pretended to be ill.

Today it is very common that when young people fall in love they even use some expressions that, analyzing it well, do not make much sense, but are very common to use. For example, I once heard a 15-year-old girl say that she had "found the love of her life." But I thought she was just 15 years old and she already says that she is the love of her life. Could it be that after 20 she will find another love of her life?, Etc. I think that any of us, adults, would understand that to say that phrase: "the love of her life" it should be said by someone who is already finishing his period of life.

But they are just starting. Sometimes they get very infatuated with their parents. They simply say that Jehovah has put that person in front of them and use any pretext to try to get away with it. But here we have a clear example. Amnon became infatuated with Tamar and even pretended to be sick to have her very close to her.

The situation is complicated because when they get infatuated they end up doing things that they do not care if they will damage the dignity of the other person.

LET'S READ: 2 Samuel 13:10,15.

10 Amnon now said to Tamar: "Bring the bread of consolation into the inner room, so that as a patient I may take it from your hand." So Tamar took the heart-shaped cakes that she had made and brought them to Amnon her brother inside the inner room. lie with me, my sister.”12 However, she told him: “No, my brother! Don't humiliate me; for it is not usually done that way in Israel. Do not do this dishonorable folly.13 And I... where shall I make my reproach go? And you... you will become like one of the fools in Israel. And now please speak to the king; because he will not hold me back from you.” 14 And he did not consent to listen to her voice, but he used strength superior to hers and humiliated her and lay with her.

What happened here? In the previous verses, in verses 1 and 2, he talked about how he was in love with her and how he was in anguish for her. I mean, he apparently had very strong feelings of appreciation, of true love. But here the situation changed completely. He found a way for Tamar to serve him a meal and then made an immoral proposal. Tamar was not opposed to having a loving relationship with him, but as it should happen, for that reason she told him to speak with the king, with David, and that he was not going to oppose her becoming his wife. .

But Amnon didn't care about that. He simply wanted to show how selfish he was, satisfy himself personally and then say: Get out, what happened here? He tamar he must have been very careful, since he only wanted to deal with her in private. So he exposed himself to a situation that we now know he ended up in.

LET'S READ: 2 Samuel 13:28,29.

28 Then Absalom gave orders to his servants, saying: “Please see that as soon as Amnon's heart is in a merry mood with wine, and I certainly say to them, 'Put down Amnon!' to give him death. Do not be afraid. Have I not given you orders myself? Be strong and prove that you are brave men.” 29 And Absalom's servants proceeded to make Amnon just as Absalom had commanded; and all the other sons of the king began to get up and mount each one on his mule and flee.

What a sad outcome for Amnon. And this was not immediate to Tamar's rape. It was two years after Absalom did this. That is, he had it in his heart that he should avenge his sister. All this was because of Amnon's selfishness, which caused a tragedy. So, young Christians, be very careful about the steps you take in courting another Christian man or woman. We need to be obedient to the instructions that Jehovah gives us, and also to the suggestions that the faithful slave provides to avoid situations that can later lead to serious sin.

Without a doubt, Jehovah is the best adviser we have for this, and we want to see this example of Amnon as something that really warns us to be careful when courting someone who faithfully serves Jehovah and never tarnish our friendship with Almighty God.
