Let's Examine the Scriptures Every Day 2022

Friday April 22, 2022

I tell each of you not to think of yourself more than you should, but to think in a way that shows good judgment (Rom. 12:3).

Jehovah's servants are humble and obey his rules, because we understand that he always knows what is best for us (Eph. 4:22-24). Humility leads us to put his will above our own and to think that others are superior to us. As a result, we have a good relationship with Jehovah and with our brothers (Phil. 2:3). Now, if we are not careful, the proud and selfish attitude of the people of Satan's world could influence us. Apparently, some first-century Christians were in this danger, for the apostle Paul gave this advice to the congregation in Rome: “I tell each one of you not to think of yourself more than you ought to think, but to think in a way that shows good judgment.” As we see, Paul recognized that we must have a certain degree of self-esteem. But humility will help us have a balanced opinion of ourselves and not give ourselves too much importance. w20.07 2 paras. 1, 2

What attitude should a brother have if he receives a responsibility?

For us, it is an honor to serve Jehovah to the best of our ability (Ps. 27:4; 84:10). It is good for a brother to want to do more in Jehovah's organization. In fact, the Bible says: “If a man is striving to be an overseer, he wants a very good job” (1 Tim. 3:1). But, if he is given a responsibility, it should not go to his head (Luke 17:7-10). His goal should be to serve others with humility (2 Cor. 12:15).

What do we learn from the example of Diotrephes, Uzziah, and Absalom?

The Bible speaks of people who thought they were very important. For example, Diotrephes lacked modesty and liked to "come first" in the congregation (3 John 9). Uzziah showed that he was proud when he tried to do a job that Jehovah had not given him (2 Chron. 26: 16-21). Cunningly, Absalom tried to endear himself to the people because he wanted to be king (2 Sam. 15:2-6). As these Bible accounts clearly show, Jehovah dislikes people who seek his own glory.—Prov. 25:27. Those who are carried away by pride and ambition end very badly (Prov. 16:18).

What example did Jesus give us?

What a different example Jesus gave us. The Bible says that “although he existed in the form of God, he did not think to take God's place and become equal to him” (Phil. 2:6). He is the most powerful person after Jehovah. Still, he doesn't think of himself more than he should. He told his disciples: "He that behaves as one of the least among you all is the one that is greatest" (Luke 9:48). It is very pleasant to serve alongside pioneers, ministerial servants, elders, and circuit overseers, who imitate the humility of Jesus. When Jehovah's servants are humble, we demonstrate the love that identifies God's people (John 13:35).

What should we do if it seems to us that the problems of the congregation are not being dealt with well?

What should we do if we feel that there are problems in the congregation and we think that they are not being handled well? Instead of complaining, let's be humble and support those who lead us (Heb. 13:17). What will help us achieve it? Let's ask ourselves: “Are the problems I see really that serious? If they need to be corrected, is this the time to do it? Is it up to me to correct them? Being honest, what am I looking for: the unity of the congregation or my personal glory?
