Let us not become spiritually sick like the people of Judah (10 mins.)

Health is something we all value. When we feel unwell, we seek medical attention because we want to recover as quickly as possible. However, there is a much more important kind of health than physical health: spiritual health. A person may appear to be fine on the outside, but be very ill spiritually.

In the days of the prophet Jeremiah, the people of Judah suffered from a serious spiritual sickness. Jehovah clearly showed them what their problem was, warned them of the danger, and indicated how they could be healed. But most refused to listen. As a result, they suffered the consequences of their decisions.

Let's analyze what happened to them and how we can avoid making the same mistakes.

The people of Judah were stubborn and rebellious (Jer 4:4, 14; w13 3/15 9, 10 pars. 8, 9).

Jehovah was fully aware of the spiritual condition of his people. Through Jeremiah, he told them: “Remove the foreskins of your hearts.” With these words, Jehovah was indicating that the problem was not in outward appearances or rituals, but in the heart.

LET'S READ JEREMIAH 4:4, 14

“Circumcise yourselves to the Lord, and remove the foreskin of your hearts, men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, lest my wrath be kindled like a fire and burn with no one able to quench it because of your evil deeds.” 14 Cleanse your heart of wickedness, O Jerusalem, that I may save you. How long will you harbor evil thoughts?”

The Bible teaches that evil desires, thoughts, and actions originate in the heart. As we read at Mark 7:20-23, it is from within a person that things that defile them come. That is why Jehovah made an accurate diagnosis of Judah’s problem: their hearts were rebellious.

Jeremiah 5:23, 24 describes the people, saying: “This people has a stubborn and rebellious heart.” It was not a problem of ignorance. They knew God’s standards, but they did not want to obey them. Their thoughts and desires were in conflict with Jehovah’s will.

For that reason, Jehovah urged them to undergo a symbolic heart operation. They needed to remove everything that had made them insensitive to divine guidance. They needed to eliminate the wrong thoughts, desires, and motives that were affecting their relationship with God.

What lesson do we learn? That spiritual health depends largely on the condition of our heart. We can attend meetings, participate in spiritual activities, and make a good impression, but Jehovah sees what is inside us.

Therefore, it is good to ask ourselves: Am I cultivating an obedient heart? Do I humbly accept the counsel of God's Word? Are there thoughts, desires, or attitudes that might be weakening my spirituality?

If we regularly examine our hearts and make the necessary changes, we will avoid developing the same rebellious attitude that characterized the inhabitants of Judah.

They were not interested in receiving Jehovah's diagnosis of their spiritual condition (Jer 5:31; jr 114 par. 2).

When a person is ill, they usually want to know the truth about their condition. Even if the diagnosis is difficult to hear, they need to know it in order to receive the appropriate treatment.

However, that was not the case for many Jews in Jeremiah's day. They preferred to hear pleasant messages rather than the truth.

LET'S READ JEREMIAH 5:31

“The prophets prophesy lies, and the priests use their authority to dominate others. And my own people love that. But what will you do when the end comes?”

This text shows that they liked to hear what their religious leaders said, even if these leaders were not conveying Jehovah’s message. Furthermore, Jeremiah 6:14 indicates that some were saying, “There is peace! There is peace!” when in reality there was no peace.

The situation was similar to that of a patient who goes to the doctor wanting only good news. Imagine someone with a serious illness who ignores the symptoms and seeks out a doctor who will tell them everything is fine. Such an attitude wouldn't solve the problem; on the contrary, it would allow the disease to progress.

The Jews acted that way spiritually. They did not want to acknowledge the seriousness of their situation. They were not interested in knowing how Jehovah viewed them. That is why Jeremiah asked: “Where is Jehovah?” The people had stopped sincerely seeking his guidance and approval.

Today, too, we must be careful. No one likes to be corrected. Sometimes, reading the Bible, attending a Christian meeting, or receiving Scripture-based counsel may point out areas where we need to improve. How will we react?

The right attitude is to be grateful for the spiritual diagnosis that Jehovah provides through his Word. We may discover that we need to strengthen our faith, improve our prayers, be more consistent in worship, or correct some wrong attitude. Although the counsel may be uncomfortable at first, it is an expression of Jehovah's love.

A wise person doesn't reject the diagnosis; they accept it and act accordingly. Likewise, let us maintain a humble heart and be willing to make changes when God's Word reveals areas that need attention.

Because they did not listen to Jehovah's warnings, he punished them (Jer 6:17-19).

Jehovah not only identified the problem. He also sent repeated warnings so that the people could change.

LET'S READ JEREMIAH 6:17-19

“And I appointed watchmen, who said, ‘Listen to the sound of the trumpet!’ But they answered, ‘We will not listen.’ 18 Therefore, listen, O nations! And know, O assembly, what will happen to them. 19 Listen, O earth! I am going to send a calamity upon this people as a result of their own evil plans, because they did not listen to my words and rejected my law.”

In ancient times, sentinels alerted the people when danger approached. The sound of the horn was a warning that could save lives. But how did the people of Judah react? They replied, “We will not pay attention.”

What a sad response. Jehovah was trying to protect them, but they rejected his warnings. They closed their ears to the prophets' messages and continued with their own plans.

Therefore, Jehovah declared: “I am going to send a calamity upon this people as a result of their own wicked plans, because they did not pay attention to my words and rejected my law” (Jeremiah 6:19).

Notice that the consequences were not arbitrary. They reaped the results of their own decisions. Jehovah had given them opportunities to repent, but they chose to ignore them.

This experience teaches us a very important lesson. Jehovah continues to warn and guide his servants through his Word. When we receive Bible guidance, we should not view it as a burden or a limitation, but as a protection.

Each time we obey God's principles, we avoid many problems and strengthen our friendship with Jehovah. On the other hand, if we repeatedly ignore his counsel, our spiritual health can gradually deteriorate.

Therefore, when Jehovah warns us through the Scriptures, we should heed his warnings immediately. Listening and obeying will always be the best course of action.

The picture in our activity guide shows a sister meditating during her personal study. She is using the Bible, her tablet, and the book “Insight.” A doctor is also shown pointing to a drawing of the human body on a tablet. This reminds us that if we were seriously ill, we would want an accurate diagnosis so that we could receive timely and appropriate treatment. Similarly, in a spiritual sense, we should be willing to receive an honest evaluation of our spiritual condition and act upon the guidance Jehovah gives us through his Word.

Conclusion

The experience of Judah represents a serious warning for us.

We saw that the people were stubborn and rebellious, allowing evil desires and thoughts to dominate their hearts. We also saw that they were not interested in receiving Jehovah's diagnosis, preferring pleasant messages to the truth. Finally, we learned that because they did not heed God's warnings, they suffered the consequences of their disobedience.

Let none of us allow anything like that to happen. Let us keep our hearts sensitive to Jehovah’s guidance, humbly accept his assessment of our spiritual condition, and act promptly when we receive counsel or correction.

If we do this, we will maintain good spiritual health and continue to enjoy Jehovah’s approval and blessing. In this way, we will avoid becoming spiritually sick like the inhabitants of Judah.
