Start conversations (3 mins.) INFORMAL PREACHING. Teach the person God's name (lmd lesson 4 point 3).
Setting: During a break at work, the publisher has a conversation with a colleague. In it, using the Bible, the publisher shows the colleague God's name and helps him see God as someone closer and who cares for him.
Assistant: [Name], sometimes I think about God, but I don't know… I feel like he's very far away from us, like he's busy with bigger things and not with what's happening to me.
Publisher: I understand what you're saying, [Name]. A lot of people go through that. But you know, something that really helped me was discovering that God doesn't want us to see Him as someone distant.
Assistant: Oh, no?
Publisher: No. In fact, he himself wants us to know him personally. And interestingly, the Bible not only calls him “God” or “Lord,” but also tells us his name.
Assistant: His name? I always thought "God" was his name.
Publisher: It's very common to think that. I used to think that too. But "God" is more of a title, like "doctor" or "professor." He has a proper name.
Assistant: And what is it?
Publisher: Look at this text. (opens the Bible) In Psalm 83:18 it says: “Let people know that you, whose name is Jehovah, are the Most High over all the earth.”
Assistant: Jehovah… I had never seen him like this.
Publisher: Yes. And that really impacted me. Because when I started using that name when I prayed, I felt like I was no longer talking to something abstract, but to someone real, with whom I could have a relationship.
Assistant: It sounds different… closer.
Publisher: Exactly. It's like when you learn the name of someone important to you. The relationship changes; it becomes more personal, more trusting.
Assistant: But then… why does almost nobody use it?
Publisher: Good question. Over time, many Bible translations stopped using it or replaced it with "Lord." But the name appears thousands of times in the original texts. It's not something invented or exclusive to any one group.
Assistant: I didn't know that... I'm surprised.
Publisher: It surprised me too. And I'm not saying that as if I knew more than anyone else, but because it helped me see God in a closer and less cold way.
Assistant: So, knowing his name helps you feel closer to him…
Publisher:That's what I've felt. And something beautiful is that the Bible portrays Jehovah as someone who listens, who cares about us, and who wants us to seek him.
Assistant: It makes me think differently… it makes him feel more like a friend and less like a judge.
Publisher: Exactly. And if you'd like, another day we can look at more texts that describe what he's like, without pressure, just so you can get to know him better.
Assistant: Yes, I'd like that. Thank you for explaining it that way, [Name]. It doesn't feel like a chore, but rather interesting.
Publisher: I'm glad. Thank you for listening.
