Watchtower Study, “Article 7”, April 13-19, 2026, The Meaning and Importance of Baptism, Answers.

“Make disciples . . . baptizing them” (MATT. 28:19).

1. How do we know that baptism is a fundamental teaching of the Bible?

Baptism is a fundamental teaching because it appears from the very beginning of the Christian congregation. At Pentecost in the year 33, when Peter preached, thousands accepted the message and were baptized, as Acts 2:38-41 states.

Later, the apostle Paul confirmed that “the teachings about baptisms” are part of the basic teachings about Christ. This leads us to understand that baptism is not a secondary or optional topic; it is essential for anyone who wants to follow Jesus. A thorough understanding of its meaning strengthens our faith and helps us to better appreciate the decision we make.

2. Why is it so important that we understand the teaching of baptism well?

The paragraph uses the example of a house with a good foundation. For a house to be strong, it needs a solid foundation. Similarly, to have a firm faith, we must have a good understanding of the Bible's fundamental teachings, including baptism. That is why it is important to carefully analyze what the Bible teaches on this subject.

When we truly understand what baptism symbolizes, how it is performed, and what it entails, our faith is greatly strengthened. This makes us realize that we never stop learning, even if we have been baptized for many years.

Continuing to delve deeper into these truths helps us to maintain a strong relationship with Jehovah and to remember why we made that important decision to dedicate our lives to him.

WHAT IT MEANS AND WHY IT IS IMPORTANT

3. What do we demonstrate when we are baptized?

When someone gets baptized, it demonstrates several very important things. First, that they have accepted the truth about Jehovah and Jesus Christ. Second, that they have repented of their sins and made changes in their life. And third, that they have decided to dedicate their life to doing God's will.

He also acknowledges that Jesus is the means Jehovah uses to save us and promises God in prayer that he will serve him along with his organization. All of this makes baptism a very special moment.

This leads us to believe that baptism is not the end of the road, but the beginning of a new one. From that moment on, a spiritual journey begins that draws us ever closer to eternal life and a deeper friendship with Jehovah.

4. What does being completely submerged in water symbolize? (See also the image).

Baptism symbolizes a profound change in our lives. When a person is fully immersed in water, it represents leaving behind their former way of life. And when they emerge from the water, it symbolizes the beginning of a new life dedicated to doing God's will.

This is reminiscent of Colossians 2:12, which compares baptism to being buried and then resurrected. This leads us to believe that baptism represents a real transformation, as in the example of the brother who gave up habits like smoking and alcohol abuse.

Many people make important changes before they get baptized and, after baptism, they continue to strive to live in a way that honors Jehovah every day.

ILLUSTRATION

Series of images: A man is baptized after overcoming several obstacles. 1. He enthusiastically watches a boxing match on television. 2. He smokes a cigarette. 3. He drinks too much alcohol. 4. Some time later, he is baptized in a swimming pool.

When we are baptized, we put an end to our former way of life and begin a new life centered on doing God's will. (See paragraph 4.)

5. How is what we do to prepare for baptism similar to what Noah did to build the ark? (1 Peter 3:18-21).

The apostle Peter compared baptism to Noah’s construction of the ark, as stated in 1 Peter 3:18-21. For Noah, building the ark was an enormous task, but he obeyed Jehovah and followed his instructions precisely. According to Genesis 6:22, he did “everything God had commanded him.”

Something similar happens with those preparing for baptism. At first, it may seem like a long or difficult process because it involves learning from the Bible and making life changes. But, like Noah, we have Jehovah’s help.

This makes us realize that Jehovah never asks the impossible of us. If we have faith and follow his instructions step by step, we can fulfill his expectations and approach baptism with joy and confidence.

6. What did Peter mean when he said, “Baptism [...] is saving you”?

As we see in 1 Peter 3:21, Peter said, “Baptism is saving you,” but he did not mean that water has the power to cleanse sins. The Bible explains in 1 John 1:7 that only the blood of Jesus Christ can do that.

So why is baptism said to save? It is said to save because it is a step that demonstrates our faith and obedience to Jehovah. By getting baptized, we ask God for a good conscience—that is, his forgiveness and approval.

This leads us to believe that baptism is closely linked to our personal relationship with Jehovah. He lovingly responds to that sincere request and, based on Jesus’ sacrifice, gives us the opportunity to receive the greatest gift: everlasting life.

HOW IT IS DONE AND WHAT IT ENTAILS

7. How should baptism be performed?

The Bible teaches that baptism should be performed by complete immersion in water. While it doesn't give many details about the ceremony, it does provide principles for everything to be done in an orderly and modest manner, as stated in 1 Corinthians 14:40 and 1 Timothy 2:9.

An elder usually performs the baptism, but he is not given special or superior treatment, because we are all servants of Jehovah. Furthermore, the baptism is valid regardless of whether many or few people are present.

This leads us to believe that what is important is not the ceremony itself, but the meaning of the step we take. It is a simple act, but a profoundly spiritual one that demonstrates our decision to serve Jehovah wholeheartedly.

8. What questions are asked of baptismal candidates, and for what purpose? (Acts 2:38-42; see also the picture).

Before being baptized, candidates answer two questions that allow them to make a public declaration of their faith, as mentioned in Romans 10:9, 10.

The first question confirms that the person has repented of their sins, dedicated themselves to Jehovah, and accepts that Jesus Christ is the means of salvation. The second question confirms that they understand that by getting baptized, they are publicly demonstrating that they are one of Jehovah's Witnesses and will become part of God's organization.

This follows the example of the first-century Christians mentioned in Acts 2:38-42. This leads us to understand that baptism is not merely a private decision. It also involves publicly identifying ourselves with Jehovah and serving him along with our brothers and sisters in the congregation.

ADDITIONAL COMMENT

Before baptism, two questions are asked so that the person can make a public declaration of faith. The first confirms that he or she has repented, dedicated himself or she to Jehovah, and accepted Jesus as the means of salvation. The second shows that he or she understands that, by being baptized, he or she becomes one of Jehovah's Witnesses and part of his organization. As Romans 10:9, 10 states, he or she publicly expresses his or her faith.

When we are baptized, we make a “public declaration that leads to salvation.” (See paragraph 8.)

9. What do we all have to do to gain God's approval?

Someone may have lived a moral life or grown up in a Jehovah's Witness family before learning the truth. Even so, we all need to repent and be baptized to gain God's approval. The reason is that we are all born imperfect, as Psalm 51:5 says, and we need to draw close to Jehovah.

When we learn the truth, we make the decision to leave behind our former way of life and begin to live in a way that pleases him. According to Acts 3:19, repentance involves turning around and changing course. This helps us understand that baptism does not depend on how our life was before, but on our personal decision to obey Jehovah and dedicate our life to him.

10. What should you do if you were already baptized as a member of another religion?

If someone was previously baptized into another religion, they need to be baptized again as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. The reason is that when they were baptized before, they did not have accurate knowledge of the truth about Jehovah and Jesus Christ.

We see the first-century example in Acts 19:1-5. Some men in Ephesus had been baptized, but when the apostle Paul explained the correct teachings to them, they understood that they should be baptized again.

This leads us to believe that, for Jehovah to approve of baptism, a person must correctly understand his will. Baptism is not merely a religious act, but a conscious decision based on knowledge of Bible truth and a sincere desire to serve Jehovah.

“IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, AND OF THE SON, AND OF THE HOLY SPIRIT”

11. What does it mean to be baptized “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy spirit”? (Matthew 28:18-20).

Jesus said in Matthew 28:18-20 that the disciples should be baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. In the Bible, the term “name” often refers to someone’s authority and position.

Therefore, being baptized in that name means acknowledging Jehovah's authority, accepting the role of Jesus Christ, and understanding how the holy spirit operates. It is not simply a matter of uttering a few words during baptism, but of accepting what each person represents.

This leads us to understand that baptism involves acknowledging the order that Jehovah has established. When we do so, we demonstrate humility and a willingness to obey God and follow the guidance he provides through his Son and his spirit.

12. What does it mean to be baptized in the name of the Father? (Revelation 4:11; see also the picture).

Being baptized in the name of the Father means acknowledging that Jehovah is our Creator and our heavenly Father. As Revelation 4:11 says, he created all things and deserves our worship.

It also involves recognizing that he hears our prayers and that we use his name with respect, as mentioned at Psalm 65:2. But there is something even more important: recognizing that Jehovah saves us through Jesus Christ, as explained at Romans 5:8.

This leads us to believe that, after baptism, we continue to strengthen our relationship with Jehovah. We pray with confidence, speak of him with respect, and strive to live in a way that honors his name.

ADDITIONAL COMMENT

Being baptized in the name of the Father means acknowledging that Jehovah is our Creator and heavenly Father. As Revelation 4:11 states, it also involves using his name with reverence and praying to him with confidence, according to Psalm 65:2, and accepting that he saves us through Jesus Christ, as Romans 5:8 explains.

After we are baptized, we must continue to demonstrate that we recognize the Father's position and authority. (See paragraph 12.)

13. What does it mean to be baptized in the name of the Son? (See also the image.)

Being baptized in the name of the Son means recognizing that Jesus is the only way to draw near to Jehovah. He himself said at John 14:6 that “he is the way.” We also recognize that he is our Redeemer because he gave his life so that we may live forever.

That is why we strive to follow his example, as 1 John 2:6 says. This includes preaching with zeal, as Jesus did according to Luke 4:43, and remaining faithful even in the face of difficulties, as 2 Timothy 3:12 mentions.

This leads us to believe that accepting Jesus is not just about believing in him, but about imitating his life. We also respect his role as head of the congregation, obeying the guidance that Jehovah gives through those who care spiritually for his people.

After we are baptized, we must continue to demonstrate that we recognize the position and authority of the Son. (See paragraph 13.)

14. (a) What does it mean to be baptized in the name of the holy spirit? (See also the picture.)

Being baptized in the name of the holy spirit involves recognizing that the holy spirit is God's active force, not a person or part of a Trinity. The Bible explains that, by means of that force, Jehovah guided the prophets and Bible writers, as stated at 2 Peter 1:20-21.

That is why we value the Bible so much and strive to read it and apply it in our lives. We also understand that the holy spirit helps the congregation function in harmony. That is why we avoid conduct that might grieve him, as Ephesians 4:30 warns.

This reminds us that, even after baptism, we continue to need the help of the Holy Spirit every day. When we allow Him to influence our thoughts and actions, we demonstrate that we truly value the role He plays in our Christian life.

14. b) What other baptisms do the anointed receive? (See the box “Baptisms that the anointed receive”).

In addition to water baptism, anointed Christians receive other symbolic baptisms mentioned in the Bible. For example, they are baptized with holy spirit when Jehovah chooses them to rule with Christ in heaven, as mentioned at Matthew 3:11.

They are also said to be baptized into Christ because they become closely united to him as part of his spiritual body, according to Galatians 3:27-28 and 1 Corinthians 12:27. Furthermore, they are baptized into Christ's death because they faithfully follow his example until the end of their life on Earth, as explained in Romans 6:3-5.

This leads us to believe that all Christians should remain faithful to the end. Although the anointed ones have a heavenly hope, their example of loyalty strengthens the entire congregation.

15. What goal should we set for ourselves?

This article encourages us to set a clear goal. If we are already baptized, we should continue to deepen our understanding of “the teachings on baptisms” and strive to keep the promise we made to Jehovah when we dedicated ourselves to him.

This means continuing to learn, strengthening our faith, and remaining faithful to Jehovah in our daily lives. Baptism was not the end of the process, but the beginning of a life dedicated to God.

This makes us think that we can always continue to grow spiritually. And if someone has not yet been baptized, the following article will help to see what steps they can take to continue progressing toward making that important decision to serve Jehovah forever.
