Now that we have left behind the basic teachings about Christ, let us move forward to maturity without laying the foundations again (Heb. 6:1).
Jehovah does not expect us to reach maturity on our own. On the one hand, he gives us shepherds and teachers in the congregation who help us to “reach the maturity of an adult man and attain the full stature of the Christ.” (Eph. 4:11-13) He also gives us his holy spirit, which helps us to have “the mind of Christ.” (1 Cor. 2:14-16) Furthermore, he had the four Gospels written, which give us a thorough understanding of what Jesus did when he was on earth. If we imitate his way of thinking, speaking, and acting, we will become mature Christians. But to progress toward maturity, we must go beyond “the basic teachings about the Christ.” w24.04 4, 5 pars. 11, 12
What are “the basic teachings about Christ”?
To progress toward maturity, we must go beyond “the basic teachings about the Christ.” Some of these fundamental teachings relate to repentance, faith, baptism, and the resurrection (Heb. 6:1, 2). All true Christians need to know them. That is why the apostle Peter mentioned them when he preached to a multitude at Pentecost (Acts 2:32-35, 38). To become disciples of Christ, it is essential to accept these teachings. In fact, Paul said that not believing in the resurrection is the same as rejecting the entire Christian faith (1 Cor. 15:12-14). However, we must not be content with having only this basic knowledge.
What should we do to benefit from the solid spiritual food spoken of in Hebrews 5:14?
Besides the basic teachings, we have solid spiritual food. This food includes not only Jehovah’s laws but also his principles, which help us to understand his way of thinking. To benefit from it, we need to study the Bible, meditate on it, and strive to apply what we learn. This teaches us to make decisions that please Jehovah. (Read Hebrews 5:14.)
How did Paul help the Corinthians to mature?
Immature Christians struggle to make good decisions when they don't find a specific Bible rule telling them what to do. In such cases, some may think they can do whatever they want. Others may ask for a rule to be set when it is not actually necessary. For example, it appears that the Christians in Corinth asked Paul to establish a rule about whether they could eat food that had been offered to idols. Instead of telling them what to do, Paul explained that each person has the “right to choose” according to his conscience. He mentioned several Bible principles that would help them make a decision that would give them peace of mind and not cause anyone else to stumble (1 Cor. 8:4, 7-9). In this way, he was teaching them to mature so that they would use their discernment rather than relying on others or searching for rules.
