Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners (1 Tim. 1:15).

Imagine giving a loved one a beautiful and practical gift. Wouldn't it be sad if that person simply put it away and forgot about it? But how happy we would be if the person were truly grateful and showed it by using the gift. What does this example teach us? Well, Jehovah gave his Son for us. How pleased he must be when we show him our gratitude for the precious gift of the ransom and for the love he showed us! (John 3:16; Rom. 5:7, 8) However, as the years go by, we may begin to take the gift of the ransom for granted. We are happy to have it, but, so to speak, it is as if we put it away and forget about it. To avoid this happening and to prevent us from losing our gratitude, we should regularly meditate on what Jehovah and Jesus have done for us. w25.01 26 pars. 1, 2

What is one way we benefit now from the bailout?

We are already benefiting from Christ’s sacrifice. For example, thanks to the ransom, Jehovah forgives our sins. And he does so not because he is obligated, but because he wants to. In a song, David gratefully said: “You, O Jehovah, are good and willing to forgive.” (Psalm 86:5; 103:3, 10-13)

To whom did Jehovah give the ransom? (Luke 5:32; 1 Timothy 1:15).

Some people feel that they do not deserve Jehovah’s forgiveness. But in reality, none of us do. The apostle Paul admitted: “I do not deserve to be called an apostle.” But he then added: “By God’s undeserved kindness I am what I am.” (1 Cor. 15:9, 10) When we repent of our sins, Jehovah forgives us. Why? Not because we deserve it, but because he loves us. So, if we feel bad because we think we do not deserve Jehovah’s forgiveness, let us remember that he did not give the ransom for perfect people, but for imperfect people who repent of their sins. (Read Luke 5:32; 1 Timothy 1:15.)

Why can no one claim to deserve Jehovah's mercy?

No matter how many years we have served Jehovah, we should never think that we have earned his mercy. Of course, he values all the things we have done for him (Heb. 6:10). But he did not give us his Son as payment for services rendered, but as a gift. If we were to claim that we have earned his mercy or special treatment, we would actually be saying that we did not need Christ to die for us (compare Galatians 2:21).

Why did Paul exert himself in his service to Jehovah?

Paul knew that he could not earn God’s forgiveness. So why did he exert himself so much in his service to Jehovah? Because he wanted to show his gratitude for God’s undeserved kindness (Eph. 3:7). In the same way, we continue to serve Jehovah zealously not because we want to earn his mercy, but because we want to show him our gratitude for it.
