Discernment will protect you (Prov. 2:11).
David told his son Solomon that he would only succeed as long as he obeyed Jehovah God. Sadly, toward the end of his life, Solomon began to worship other gods. As a result, Jehovah withdrew his favor, and Solomon no longer had the wisdom needed to rule justly and righteously. (1 Kings 11:9, 10; 12:4)
What is the lesson for us? Obedience leads to success (Ps. 1:1-3). Of course, Jehovah does not promise to give us Solomon’s riches and glory. But if we obey him, he will give us the wisdom needed to make good decisions (Prov. 2:6, 7; Jas. 1:5). His principles are very practical and help us in matters such as employment, education, entertainment, and money. Letting ourselves be guided by God’s wisdom will prevent us from suffering permanent harm (Prov. 2:10, 11). We will have good friendships and the guidance we need to enjoy a happy family life. w24.11 10, 11 pars. 11, 12
How did Carmen achieve success in life?
Carmen, who lives in Mozambique, thought that the key to success was higher education. So she decided to go to university and study architecture. “I loved what I was learning,” she said. “But it was very time-consuming and draining. I had classes from 7:30 in the morning until 6:00 in the evening. It was difficult for me to attend meetings, and I became spiritually weak. Deep down, I realized that I was trying to serve two masters.” (Matt. 6:24) She prayed about this and looked for information in our publications. And what was the result? “After receiving good advice from mature brothers and my mother, I decided to leave university and serve Jehovah full-time. Thanks to that, I was able to make the best decisions of my life. And I don’t regret anything.”
In essence, what was the advice of Moses and David?
Moses and David loved Jehovah and recognized the importance of obeying him. In their parting words, they encouraged their listeners to imitate them and remain faithful to Jehovah their God. They also warned that those who turned away from Jehovah would lose his favor and the blessings he had promised. Their counsel is equally valuable for us. Centuries later, another servant of Jehovah emphasized the importance of being faithful to God.
What experiences did the apostle John have during his life?
John was a beloved apostle of Jesus Christ (Matt. 10:2; John 19:26). He accompanied Jesus during his ministry, witnessed his miracles, and stood by him in his most difficult moments. He was with him when he was executed and later saw him after his resurrection. He also witnessed the growth of Christianity in the first century: from its beginnings, when there were only a small group of believers, to the time when the good news had been “preached to all creation under heaven” (Col. 1:23).
