As long as his Nazirite vow lasts, he is holy to Jehovah (Num. 6:8).
Do you value your friendship with Jehovah? You certainly do! Throughout history, millions of people have felt the same way (Ps. 104:33, 34). Many have made sacrifices for Jehovah, such as the Nazirites of ancient Israel. Since these faithful Israelites made sacrifices to serve Jehovah in a special way, this term, which comes from a Hebrew word meaning “dedicated,” describes them well. The Mosaic Law allowed a man or woman to make a special vow to Jehovah, promising to live as a Nazirite for a period of time (Num. 6:1, 2). When someone made such a vow, they had to obey certain rules that other Israelites did not have to follow. What motivated someone to become a Nazirite? Surely it was their deep love for Jehovah and their sincere gratitude for all the blessings Jehovah had given them (Deut. 6:5; 16:17). w24.02 14 pars. 1, 2
How are we similar to the Nazarenes?
When “the law of Christ” replaced the Mosaic Law, God’s servants could no longer become Nazirites (Gal. 6:2; Rom. 10:4). However, like the Nazirites, we too want to serve Jehovah with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:30). And that is precisely what we promise when we make a vow to Jehovah, dedicating our lives to him. To live in harmony with that vow, we must do Jehovah’s will and make sacrifices. Let us analyze how the Nazirites kept their vow and how their example can help us to keep ours (Matt. 16:24).
According to Numbers 6:3, 4, what sacrifice did the Nazirites have to make?
(Read Numbers 6:3, 4.) The Nazirites were forbidden to drink alcohol or eat any products of the vine, such as grapes and raisins. These were all foods that other people commonly ate, and there was nothing wrong with them. In fact, the Bible says that wine is a gift from God and “makes man’s heart glad” (Psalm 104:14, 15). Even so, the Nazirites willingly forwent these products.
5. What sacrifices did Madian and Marcela decide to make, and why?
Like the Nazirites, we too make sacrifices to serve Jehovah more fully. Consider the example of Midian and Marcela. This couple from Colombia had a comfortable life. Midian earned a good income, so they lived in a very nice house. However, they wanted to do more for Jehovah, and to do so, they decided to make some changes. They relate: “We cut expenses, moved to a smaller apartment, and sold our car.” Midian and Marcela were not obligated to make these sacrifices; they made them so that they could devote more time to the preaching work. They are very happy and satisfied with the decision they made.
