No matter how much progress we have made, let us continue walking correctly along that same path (Phil. 3:16).

Jehovah will not consider you a failure for not reaching a goal that was beyond your reach (2 Cor. 8:12). View obstacles as learning opportunities. Keep in mind what you have already accomplished. The Bible says that “God is not unjust and does not forget your works” (Heb. 6:10). So don’t forget them either.

Think about the goals you have already achieved, such as becoming a friend of Jehovah, preaching, or getting baptized. The spiritual objectives you have met in the past show that you can continue to make progress and accomplish what you have set out to do now.

With Jehovah’s help, you can reach your goal. You can also enjoy the journey toward your goal if you focus on how Jehovah helps and blesses you along the way (2 Cor. 4:7). If you do not give up, even greater blessings await you (Gal. 6:9).

What obstacles might we face?

The sad reality is that even with all the motivation in the world, obstacles can arise. For example, an “unforeseen event” could take away the time we need to dedicate to our goal (Eccl. 9:11). We might also have a problem that discourages us and drains our strength (Prov. 24:10). Furthermore, since we are imperfect, we make mistakes that may take us further away from our goal (Rom. 7:23). Or perhaps we are simply tired (Matt. 26:43). What can help us to keep going or to overcome a bad day?

Why do we not give up in the face of obstacles? (Psalm 145:14).

Remember that taking a step back is not a defeat. According to the Bible, we are likely to face many challenges. But it also tells us that, with Jehovah’s help, we can keep going and reach our goal. (Read Psalm 145:14.) Philip, mentioned in the first paragraph, sees it this way: “For me, it’s not how many times you fall down that matters, but how many times you get up and keep going.” Let’s return to David’s example. He says: “When things get tough or I have a bad day, I don’t see those situations as obstacles. For me, they are opportunities to tell Jehovah how much I love him.” Yes, when we keep going despite problems, we show Jehovah that we want to please him. Can you imagine Jehovah’s big smile when he sees you striving to reach your goal?

What can obstacles teach us?

View obstacles as learning opportunities. Analyze the situation and ask yourself, “What could I change so that no obstacle will stop me again?” (Prov. 27:12). On the other hand, if we have not been able to reach our goal despite our efforts, might it be that the goal itself needs to be changed? To find out if this is the case, consider whether what you set out to do is truly reasonable for you. Jehovah will not consider you a failure for not reaching a goal that was beyond your reach (2 Cor. 8:12).
