Above all, love one another deeply, because love covers a multitude of sins (1 Pet. 4:8).
The Greek word the apostle Peter used for “intense” literally means “spreading out.” The second part of the verse speaks of what such intense love accomplishes: it covers the sins of our brothers and sisters. It's as if love were a cloth that one could stretch out over and over until it covered not just one or two sins, but “a multitude of sins.” In this context, “covering” means “forgiving.” Just as a piece of cloth can cover a stain, love can cover the weaknesses and imperfections of others.
Our love for our brothers and sisters should be so great that we are able to forgive their mistakes, even if it seems very difficult to do so (Col. 3:13). When we forgive others, we demonstrate that our love is strong and that we want to please Jehovah.
What can test our love?
One way to know if our love for our brothers and sisters is strong is by seeing how we react to situations that arise in life (2 Cor. 8:8). One such situation was mentioned by the apostle Peter: “Above all else, have deep love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins” (1 Pet. 4:8). So our love is tested when our brothers and sisters make mistakes or hurt us.
What else can help us overlook other people's small mistakes? Give an example. (See also the pictures.)
Focus on the good things about others, not the bad. Let's say you're spending some quality time with a group of siblings and you end up taking a group photo. To make sure you have a good memory, you take three photos. But you notice that one of the siblings didn't come out well in one of them. What will you do with that photo? Delete it and keep the other two, because everyone is smiling in them.
The photos we keep are like memories. We usually have fond memories of pleasant times spent with our siblings. But let's suppose that on one of those occasions a sibling said or did something wrong. What will you do with that memory? Why not erase it like a photo? (Prov. 19:11; Eph. 4:32). Since we have so many good memories of the times we've shared with that sibling, we can easily erase the memory of their small mistake. It's best to cherish "the beautiful photos."
What are the main ideas of this article?
Why do we want to keep our love for one another strong? As we saw, because by showing our love for our brothers and sisters, we also demonstrate that we love Jehovah. How can we express the love we feel for our spiritual family? One way to do this is by comforting our brothers and sisters. And to continue doing this, we need to feel compassion. How can we keep our love for one another strong? By doing everything possible to forgive the mistakes of others.
