Keep walking as children of light (Eph. 5:8).

If we want to continue “walking as children of light,” we need the help of God’s Holy Spirit. Why? Because it’s not easy to stay clean in this filthy world (1 Thess. 4:3-5, 7, 8). The Holy Spirit can help us confront the ideas and philosophies of this world, which go against God’s point of view. He can also help us act with “kindness, justice, and truth” (Eph. 5:9).

Jesus said that Jehovah “will give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.” (Luke 11:13) So one way to receive it is by asking Jehovah for it in prayer. Another way to receive it is by praising Jehovah in meetings with our fellow believers. (Eph. 5:19, 20) The good influence the Holy Spirit has on us will help us live lives pleasing to God.

What does it mean to continue “walking as children of light”? (Ephesians 5:7-9)

After advising the Ephesian Christians to continue avoiding darkness, Paul told them, “Keep walking as children of light” (read Ephesians 5:7-9). What does that mean? In short, to behave at all times like a true Christian. To achieve this, we must do several things. One of them is to regularly read and study the Bible and our publications. When we do so, let us especially pay close attention to the example and teachings of Jesus Christ, “the light of the world” (John 8:12; Prov. 6:23).

What will help us make good decisions? (Ephesians 5:10, 17)

When we have to make important decisions, we must find out “what Jehovah’s will is” and then do it (read Ephesians 5:10, 17). When we try to find biblical principles that apply to our situation, what we are really doing is trying to find out what Jehovah thinks about the matter. By putting these principles into practice, we will be able to make good decisions.

How can we make good use of our time?

Paul also advised the Christians in Ephesus to make good use of their time. (Read Ephesians 5:15, 16.) The “evil one,” Satan, would like to see us so busy with the things of the world that we have no time to serve God. (1 John 5:19) It can be all too easy to focus on money, education, or work instead of looking for ways to serve Jehovah.

If that were to happen to us, it would be a sign that the world's way of thinking is infecting us. Of course, these things aren't bad in and of themselves, but they should never be the first priority in our lives. To continue "walking as children of the light," we must "make the best use of our time," that is, focus on the things that are truly important.
