Sovereign Lord Jehovah, please remember me and give me strength (Judges 16:28).

What's the first thing that comes to mind when you hear about Samson? Surely it's his extraordinary strength. It's true that he was a very strong man. But he made a mistake that cost him dearly. Despite everything, Jehovah focused on the great faith he demonstrated throughout his life and decided to include his example in the Bible so we can learn from him.

Jehovah used Samson to accomplish amazing things for his people Israel. Centuries after his death, Jehovah inspired the apostle Paul to include Samson’s name on a list of outstanding examples of faith. (Heb. 11:32–34) Samson relied on Jehovah even in the worst of circumstances. His example is a great encouragement and teaches us practical lessons. w23.09 2 pars. 1, 2.

What mission did Samson receive?

When Samson was born, the Philistines dominated and oppressed the nation of Israel (Judges 13:1). Because they were so cruel, they caused the Israelites great suffering. Then Jehovah chose Samson to begin “saving Israel from the hand of the Philistines” (Judges 13:5). What a difficult mission! Obviously, Samson had to rely on Jehovah.

How did Jehovah help Samson? (Judges 15:14-16)

Let's look at one occasion when Samson demonstrated his trust in Jehovah. It turns out that a large group of Philistine soldiers had gone to Lehi, probably in Judah, to capture Samson. The men of Judah became very afraid, so they decided to hand Samson over to their enemies. His own Israelite brothers bound him tightly with two new ropes and took him to the Philistines (Judges 15:9-13). But “the Spirit of Jehovah overpowered him,” and Samson managed to free himself. Then he “found a fresh donkey's jawbone,” grabbed it, and with it killed 1,000 Philistines! (Read Judges 15:14-16.)

How did Samson show that he trusted in Jehovah?

A donkey's jawbone?! Why did Samson use such a strange weapon? Because he knew that the important thing was to rely on Jehovah, not on the weapon he used. This faithful man used whatever was at hand to do Jehovah's will. And because he relied on Him, he was very successful.
