“Since Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mental attitude” (1 PET. 4:1).
1, 2. a) What does loving Jehovah include?
Loving Jehovah means dedicating our entire being to him. In Mark 12:30, Jesus explained that we are to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. It is not just about feelings, but about an active love that motivates us to align our minds with his. Although we cannot fully understand his way of thinking, we can imitate him by studying the way Jesus reflected his Father's mind.
1, 2. b) How did Jesus demonstrate that he loved Jehovah with all his mind?
Jesus is the best example of what it means to love God with your mind. 1 Corinthians 2:16 mentions that we have the mind of Christ, which helps us understand how Jesus reflected his Father's way of thinking.
Jesus knew God's will perfectly and was totally focused on fulfilling it, without allowing difficulties or distractions to derail him. He knew that his suffering had a greater purpose, and that is why he remained faithful to the end.
To imitate his example, we must study the Bible with the aim of better knowing God's way of thinking and applying it in our daily lives. Thus, our love for Jehovah will be deeper and more sincere.
3. What did the apostle Peter learn from Jesus, and what did he encourage Christians to do? (1 Peter 4:1).
Peter spent a lot of time with Jesus and saw firsthand how he thought and acted. He learned that having the same mental attitude as Christ is essential to remaining faithful to Jehovah. In First Peter 4:1, Peter encouraged us to arm ourselves with the same mental attitude, to emphasize the importance of being prepared spiritually, like a soldier before battle.
This principle relates to what Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 10:3-5, where he explained that our struggle is not physical, but spiritual. Also in Ephesians 6:12 we are reminded that we fight against spiritual forces, so we need a strong mindset based on the way of thinking of Christ.
4. What will we analyze in this article?
Jesus perfectly reflected his Father's way of thinking. Therefore, studying his example helps us better understand Jehovah's will and align our mentality with his.
Therefore, this article will analyze the way of thinking of Jesus and how we can imitate it in our daily lives. To achieve this, we will focus on three key aspects: learning to think like Jehovah, being humble, and having good judgment.
LET'S LEARN TO THINK LIKE JEHOVAH
5. Name a time when Peter did not reflect Jehovah's way of thinking.
Peter had great faith that Jesus was the Messiah, and expressed this in Matthew 16:16. However, he did not fully understand the purpose of his mission. His reaction shows that although he loved Jesus, he still had to learn to see things from Jehovah's point of view.
Jesus corrected him severely because his comment reflected a thought closer to human concerns than to divine purposes. Peter still needed to develop the mind of Christ, that is, learn to think like Jehovah. This experience helped him grow spiritually, and over time, he himself encouraged Christians to develop the same mental attitude as Christ.
6. How did Jesus demonstrate that he thought like Jehovah?
Jesus demonstrated that he thought like Jehovah by immediately rejecting Peter's advice. In Matthew 16:23 we see how Jesus told him firmly: "Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance in my way, because you are not thinking as God thinks, but as man thinks."
Jesus understood that his suffering and death were part of divine purpose, and he would not allow anything to divert him from fulfilling his Father's will. Although Peter probably meant well, his advice reflected a human point of view, not God's.
Jesus identified that this way of thinking could be an obstacle, since it could tempt him to avoid suffering, instead of accepting his role in the plan of salvation.
7. How did Peter demonstrate that he was trying to think like Jehovah? (See image).
Jehovah showed Peter a canvas with animals that the Jews considered unclean and told him: "Do not call impure that which God has purified." This helped Peter understand that, in the eyes of God, all people can be accepted if they have faith.
Peter, who was struggling to think like Jehovah, accepted the task of preaching to Cornelius, a man of non-Jewish origin. At that time, Jews avoided contact with people from other nations, as they considered them impure.
However, Peter understood that it was time to accept non-Jews into Jehovah's people, and as a result, both Cornelius and those in his household were baptized.
ILLUSTRATION
Cornelio takes Pedro and his companions upstairs to his house.
Pedro enters Cornelius' house. (See paragraph 7).
8. How do we show that we think like Jehovah? (1 Peter 3:8 and note).
Over time, Peter understood that thinking like Jehovah meant putting aside prejudices and accepting God's guidance. His counsel in First Peter 3:8 reinforces the idea that Christians should strive for congregational harmony and think according to divine principles.
An example of this is what Jesus taught in Matthew 6:33, where he stressed the importance of putting the Kingdom first. Another example would be if a brother decides to begin full-time service: our reaction would show whether we think like Jehovah or not. Instead of discouraging him with material concerns, we should congratulate and support him. In this way we reflect the attitude of God, who values the effort to serve him fully.
LET'S BE HUMBLE
9, 10. What lesson in humility did Jesus teach?
The lesson in humility that Jesus taught his apostles was a striking example of selfless service. Instead of delegating the task of washing feet to a slave, Jesus, the Master and Lord, offered to perform this humble task. By washing the feet of his disciples, including Judas, Jesus demonstrated that true greatness is found in humility and serving others without expecting recognition.
Then Jesus explained to them that if he, who was their Master and Lord, humbled himself to serve, they should also do the same with one another. This teaching highlights that humility is essential in the Christian life and that we must be willing to serve others with love and without expecting anything in return.
11. How did Peter show that he had learned humility? (1 Peter 5:5; see also image).
Peter, who in his youth had been known for his impulsiveness, showed that he had learned humility by miraculously healing a lame man. But instead of receiving credit or glory for the miracle, he gave all the credit to Jehovah and Jesus. In Acts 3:12-16, Peter explained to the crowd that it was not by his own power or piety that the man was healed, but it was through the name of Jesus and faith in him.
This act of humility clearly reflects the learning that Peter acquired from Jesus, who always gave glory to his heavenly Father, even when he performed miracles. Furthermore, some time later, in his letter, Peter wrote to Christians about the importance of being humble, encouraging them to dress humbly in their relationships with others.
ILLUSTRATION
Peter and John in the temple. Peter points to the heavens, and next to him is a man who was lame from birth and has been healed.
Peter was humble and gave credit to Jehovah and Jesus for a miracle he performed. We too can demonstrate humility by doing things for others without expecting recognition or praise. (See paragraphs 11 and 12).
12. Like Peter, how can we cultivate humility?
The humility taught in the Bible is related to the way we think about ourselves and others. Therefore, cultivating humility, as Peter did, requires a conscious effort to change our mindset and make our actions reflect a humble heart.
It is not enough to act humbly only on the outside; our motivation must be pure. Serve others out of love for Jehovah, not for recognition. Peter himself learned not to seek personal glory, but to give it to God.
LET'S HAVE “GOOD JUDGMENT”
13. What does “good judgment” mean?
Having good judgment is a quality that goes beyond making wise decisions. It is a way of thinking that reflects divine wisdom. As Christians, we must ensure that our decisions are based on Bible principles and lead us to maintain a close relationship with Jehovah.
Furthermore, recognizing that our friendship with him is the most important thing will help us avoid falling into pride and self-sufficiency. Good judgment also involves being humble and recognizing that we are not infallible. This is reflected in the way we seek Jehovah's guidance through prayer.
14. Name a time when Peter did not rely on Jehovah.
This episode shows how Peter did not lean on Jehovah when he needed him most. Even though Jesus warned him, Peter trusted in his own strength and ability, which led him to fail. Lack of prayer and dependence on Jehovah at that critical moment resulted in his downfall.
Jesus had told him to pray to be prepared for the test, but Peter did not do so. This mistake caused him much pain and regret when he denied Jesus. After this repentance, Peter learned the valuable lesson that he cannot rely on his own strength, but on Jehovah's constant help.
ADDITIONAL COMMENT
One time when Peter did not rely on Jehovah was the night before Jesus' death, when, despite Jesus' warning that everyone would fail, Peter, confident in himself, assured that he would not. He did not follow the advice to pray and stay awake, which led him to fall into temptation and deny Jesus, which he deeply regretted later.
15. What helped Jesus to have good judgment the night before he died?
Jesus' constant prayer the night before his death was key to having good judgment and facing the difficult situation that was ahead. Although perfect, Jesus completely submitted to Jehovah's will, and prayer was his means of obtaining strength and direction.
In his prayers, Jesus showed himself humble and willing to follow Jehovah's plan, even though it would lead to a cruel death. Peter, by witnessing this intense moment, learned that good judgment does not come from one's own will or strength, but from fully trusting Jehovah and seeking his guidance through prayer.
16. How did Peter demonstrate that he had developed good judgment? (1 Peter 4:7).
Peter, like the other apostles, was instructed by Jesus to wait in Jerusalem to receive the Holy Spirit. During this period of waiting, Peter demonstrated judgment by remaining in constant prayer with his brothers. The perseverance in prayer mentioned in Acts 1:13, 14 shows how Peter learned to depend on Jehovah to guide his steps and make wise decisions.
At 1 Peter 4:7, Peter encourages others to follow his example of exercising good judgment and trusting in Jehovah through prayer. Peter learned that good judgment comes not from human reason alone, but from the humility of recognizing our dependence on Jehovah and seeking his constant guidance.
17. What do we always have to do, regardless of the skills we have? (See also the image).
Often, when we face everyday situations or make simple decisions, we may feel that we do not need to ask Jehovah for help. However, it is essential to always pray to Him, no matter how small our decisions seem to us.
This practice of praying constantly, even for what seems easy, allows us to maintain a close connection with Jehovah and ensure that our decisions are aligned with his will. As we ask for His direction, we develop good judgment that allows us to make wiser and more edifying decisions.
ILLUSTRATION
Peter learned to lean on Jehovah through prayer. We too can use good judgment by asking Jehovah for help, especially when we have to make important decisions. (See paragraph 17).
18. Like Peter, what can we do?
Like Peter, we can learn to think like Jehovah, which means meditating on his wisdom, his principles, and what he considers right. This allows us to be humble, recognizing that our own decisions are not always the best without their help.
Furthermore, like Peter, we can learn to exercise good judgment by depending on Jehovah in every situation. Peter showed how, by depending on Jehovah, one can make wise and humble decisions in every circumstance of life.
