“Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” (1 TIM. 1:15).
1. How can we make Jehovah happy?
LET'S IMAGINE that we give a very dear person a beautiful and practical gift. Wouldn't it be very sad if that person just kept it and forgot about it? But how happy we would be if the person was very grateful and showed it by using the gift. What does this example teach us? Well, Jehovah gave his Son for us. How happy he must be when we show him that we are grateful for the valuable gift of rescue and for the love he showed us! (John 3:16; Rom. 5:7, 8).
2. What will we see in this article?
2 Now, as the years go by, we may begin to take the gift of ransom for granted. We are happy to have it, but, so to speak, it is as if we put it away and forget about it. So that this does not happen to us and we do not lose gratitude, we must regularly meditate on what Jehovah and Jesus have done for us. That is the objective of this article. We will talk about how the bailout benefits us now and how it can benefit us in the future. We will also look at how we can show Jehovah that we are grateful for his love, especially during the Memorial season.
HOW WE BENEFIT NOW
3. What is one way we now benefit from the bailout?
3 We are already benefiting from Christ's sacrifice. For example, thanks to the ransom, Jehovah forgives our sins. And he does it not because he is forced, but because he wants to do it. In one song, David gratefully said, “You, O Jehovah, are good and willing to forgive” (Ps. 86:5; 103:3, 10-13).
4. For whom did Jehovah give the ransom? (Luke 5:32; 1 Timothy 1:15).
4 There are those who feel that they do not deserve Jehovah's forgiveness. But in reality none of us deserve it. The apostle Paul admitted: “I do not deserve to be called an apostle.” But then he added: “By the undeserved kindness of God I am what I am.” (1 Cor. 15:9, 10). When we repent of our sins, Jehovah forgives us. Because? Not because we deserve it, but because He loves us. So, if we feel bad because we think we do not deserve Jehovah's forgiveness, let us remember that he did not give the ransom for perfect people, but for imperfect people who repent of their sins. (see Luke 5:32; 1 Timothy 1:15).
5. Why can no one claim to deserve Jehovah's mercy?
5 No matter how many years we serve Jehovah, we should never think that we have earned his mercy. Of course, he values all the things we have done for him (Heb. 6:10). But he did not give us his Son as payment for services rendered, but as a gift. If we claimed that we had earned His mercy or special treatment, we would actually be saying that we did not need Christ to die for us. (compare Galatians 2:21).
6. Why did Paul strive in his service to Jehovah?
6 Paul knew that he could not earn God's forgiveness. So why did he work so hard in his service to Jehovah? Because he wanted to show that he was grateful for God's undeserved kindness (Eph. 3:7). Likewise, we continue to serve Jehovah enthusiastically not because we want to earn his mercy, but because we want to show him that we are grateful for it.
7. What is another way we now benefit from the bailout? (Romans 5:1; James 2:23).
7 Another benefit we now have thanks to the rescue is that we can have a close friendship with Jehovah. As we saw in the previous article, at birth we do not have a relationship with God. But because of the rescue we can enjoy “peace with God” and get closer to him (read Romans 5:1; James 2:23).
8. Why should we be grateful to Jehovah for the privilege of prayer?
8 Let us think about a very special aspect of our friendship with Jehovah: the privilege of praying to him. He not only listens to the prayers that are said publicly in meetings, but also to those that each of us makes to Him personally. It is true that prayer calms us and gives us inner peace, but the most important benefit is not that, but that it helps us strengthen our friendship with God. (Ps. 65:2; Sant. 4:8; 1 John 5:14). When Jesus was on Earth, he prayed very often because he knew that Jehovah was listening to him and that those prayers would keep his relationship with him strong. (Luc. 5:16). How grateful we are that, thanks to Jesus' sacrifice, we can be friends of Jehovah and even pray to him.
HOW WE CAN BENEFIT IN THE FUTURE
9. How will Jehovah’s faithful servants benefit from the ransom in the future?
9 How will God's faithful servants benefit from the ransom in the future? Jehovah will give them eternal life. Many people think that living forever is impossible because human beings have been dying for thousands of years. But Jehovah created human beings for the purpose of living forever. And while the idea of living forever may seem incredible today, the price Jehovah paid to give us that possibility back was also incredible: the life of his own Son. (Rom. 8:32).
10. What are the anointed and the other sheep looking forward to?
10 Although eternal life is a future benefit, Jehovah wants us to look forward to it now. The anointed look forward to living in heaven and reigning on Earth together with Christ (Apoc. 20:6). And the other sheep long to live in Paradise on Earth where there will be no pain or suffering. (Rev. 21:3, 4). Do you hope to live forever on Earth? That is not a simple second-rate award. In fact, humans were designed just to live forever on Earth. So that will make us totally happy.
11, 12. What are some of the blessings of Paradise that we long for? (See also images).
11 Imagine what your life will be like in Paradise. Illness and death will no longer be a concern (Is. 25:8; 33:24). Jehovah will give you all the good things you want. What would you like to learn? Physics? Chemistry? Music? Art? Undoubtedly, architects, builders, farmers, cooks, gardeners, and people who make tools, maintain, and otherwise support will be needed (Isa. 35:1; 65:21). You'll have forever to learn everything you want!
12 How wonderful it will be to receive the resurrected! (Num. 24:15). And how exciting it will be to continue learning about Jehovah and all the things he has created (Sal. 104:24; Is. 11:9). But the best of all will be being able to worship Jehovah without having to feel guilty for having done something wrong. Wouldn't you trade these future blessings for “enjoying the temporary pleasures of sin”? (Heb. 11:25). It's worth any sacrifice we have to make now. Remember that there will come a time when Paradise will cease to be a promise for the future and will become a reality. And all this is possible only because Jehovah loved us so much that he gave his Son to die for us.
ILLUSTRATION
Images of brothers enjoying life in Paradise: 1. A couple builds a house. 2. A brother plays the violin. 3. A couple runs to meet their little daughter who has just been resurrected. 4. A sister in her pottery workshop molds clay to make a vessel. 5. A sister harvests many grapes. 6. A father and his son watch a sloth climbing a tree.
What blessings of Paradise are you most looking forward to enjoying? (See paragraphs 11 and 12).
LET'S SHOW JEHOVAH THAT WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR HIS LOVE
13. How can we show that we are grateful for Jehovah's love? (2 Corinthians 6:1).
13 How can we show Jehovah that we appreciate him giving us the ransom? Making serving you the most important thing in our lives (Matt. 6:33). Ultimately, Jesus died “so that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was resurrected” (2 Cor. 5:15). For nothing in the world do we want to lose sight of the objective of Jehovah's undeserved kindness (it’s 2 Corinthians 6:1).
14. How can we show that we have faith in Jehovah's instructions?
14 Another way to thank Jehovah for his love is to demonstrate faith by following his instructions. And how is that done? When we have to make decisions, such as how much we will study or what job we will accept, we must consider what Jehovah wants us to do. (1 Cor. 10:31; 2 Cor. 5:7). When we demonstrate our faith with works, something wonderful happens: our faith and our friendship with God become even stronger. And our hope is also strengthened (Rom. 5:3-5; James 2:21, 22).
15. How can we show gratitude during the Memorial season?
15 Another way to show our appreciation for Jehovah’s rescue and love is to make the most of the Memorial season. In addition to making plans to be present, we can invite others to attend (1 Tim. 2:4). When we do, let's explain what this special meeting is about. We can show the jw.org videos Why did Jesus die? and Let us remember the death of Jesus. The elders will be sure to invite the inactive. Can you imagine the happiness in heaven and on earth if some of Jehovah's lost sheep feel moved to return to the fold? (Luke 15:4-7). At the Commemoration we can set the goal of not only greeting each other, but especially those who are new or those who have not attended for a long time. Let's make everyone feel welcome! (Rom. 12:13).
16. Why should we consider increasing our service during the Memorial season?
16 Can we use the Memorial season to increase our service to Jehovah? This is a great way to show appreciation for all that Jehovah and Jesus have done for us. The more we preach, the more we will see Jehovah's support and the more our confidence in him will be strengthened. (1 Cor. 3:9). Also, let us remember to do the Memorial Bible reading, which appears in the Examine the Scriptures Every Day booklet and in a chart in the Activity Guide. We can even use those Bible passages for a study project.
17. What makes Jehovah happy with us? (See also the box “Ways to Be Thankful for Jehovah's Love.”)
17 And what if your circumstances do not allow you to follow all the suggestions given in this article? Don't worry. Remember that Jehovah does not compare what you do with what others do. He looks into your heart and is very happy because he knows that you are deeply grateful for the valuable gift of ransom. (1 Sam. 16:7; Mark 12:41-44).
18. Why are we very grateful to Jehovah and Jesus?
18 It is only through the ransom that we can receive forgiveness of our sins, be friends of Jehovah, and have the hope of living eternally. Let us always show that we are grateful for Jehovah's love, which prompted him to give us all those blessings (1 Juan 4:19). And let us also show that we are very grateful because Jesus loved us so much that he gave his life for us. (Juan 15:13).
