Walk modestly with your God (Micah 6:8).
Modesty and humility are qualities that are closely related. The modest person has a balanced view of himself and knows his limits. Someone humble respects others and considers them superior (Phil. 2:3). Generally, those who are modest are also humble. Gideon was modest and humble. When an angel told him that Jehovah had chosen him to free the Israelites from the control of the powerful Midianites, Gideon humbly responded: “My clan is the least of Manasseh, and I am the least of my father's house” (Judges 6:15). He thought he wasn't up to the job. But Jehovah knew he could do it, and with his help Gideon was successful. Elders try their best to always be modest and humble (Acts 20:18, 19). They don't brag about their abilities or achievements, and they aren't too hard on themselves when they make a mistake or something doesn't go right. w23.06 3 paras. 4, 5.
How did Gideon show that he was modest and humble?

What situations might test the modesty and humility of elders?
Elders try their best to always be modest and humble (Mic. 6:8; Acts 20:18, 19). They don't brag about their abilities or achievements, and they aren't too hard on themselves when they make a mistake or something doesn't go right. But there are situations that can test your modesty and humility. Let's give a couple of examples. Perhaps an elderly person accepts many responsibilities and then finds that he or she cannot handle them all. You may receive criticism for how you handled an issue or praise for a job well done. In cases like these, how could Gideon's example help the elderly?
How can elders be modest like Gideon? (See also the image).
Ask for help. The modest person knows that they cannot do everything. Because Gideon was modest, he asked others for help (Judges 6:27, 35; 7:24). Wise elders do the same. Tony, mentioned in paragraph 2, explains: “Because of my upbringing, I tended to take on more work than I could actually handle. That's why I decided to talk about modesty in our family worship and asked my wife for her opinion. I also reviewed a video on jw.org called Just like Jesus, let us empower others and trust them.” Tony began to ask others for help, and he tells us what the result was: “Everything is well taken care of in the congregation, and now I have more time to strengthen my friendship with Jehovah.”
How can elders imitate Gideon when someone criticizes them? (James 3:13).
Stay calm if they criticize you. Receiving criticism can test an elder. Again, Gideon's example may be helpful. He was aware that he was not perfect, and when the men of Ephraim criticized him, he remained calm (Judges 8:1-3). Instead of getting angry, he was humble and listened to them, and with great kindness he managed to calm things down. Wise elders are like Gideon. When someone criticizes them, they listen carefully and respond mildly (read James 3:13). By doing this they contribute to peace reigning in the congregation.
