When I leave, fierce wolves will come in among you (Acts 20:29).
During the Thousand-Year Reign, Jesus will resurrect those who have died and help all obedient humans to perfection. Those whom Jehovah judges righteous “will inherit the earth and live there forever.”—Ps. 37:10, 11, 29. And “the last enemy, death, will be destroyed.”—1 Cor. 15:26. What a joy! Our hope of living forever is well founded in God’s Word. This hope helps us remain loyal in these difficult last days. But if we want to please Jehovah, we must remain loyal to him and Jesus not only to save our lives but especially because we love them from the heart.—2 Cor. 5:14, 15. That love is what moves us to follow his example and to speak of our hope.—Rom. 10:13–15. The more we strive to overcome selfishness and be generous, the more Jehovah will want to be our friend forever. w22.12 7 pars. 15, 16.
What do the resurrections of the past demonstrate? (See drawing.)Jehovah is the one who gives us life and has the ability to restore life to those who have died. He empowered the prophet Elijah to resurrect the son of the widow of Zarephath. (1 Kings 17:21–23) Later, with God’s help, the prophet Elisha resurrected the son of a woman from Shunem. (2 Kings 4:18–20, 34–37) These and other resurrections show that Jehovah has the power to restore life to those who have died. And while Jesus was on earth, he made it clear that his Father had given him that same power. (John 11:23–25, 43, 44) Now Jesus is in heaven and has been given “all authority in heaven and on earth.” So he can fulfill the promise that “all who are in the graves” will come back to life with the hope of continuing to live forever (Matt. 28:18; John 5:25-29).
How does rescue make it possible for us to live forever?
Why did Jehovah allow his beloved Son to suffer such a painful death? Jesus provided the answer when he said: “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that no one who shows faith in him should be destroyed but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) By giving his Son as a ransom for the forgiveness of our sins, God gives us the opportunity to gain eternal life. (Matt. 20:28) The apostle Paul explained this important part of God’s purpose with these words: “As death came through a man, so also the resurrection of the dead comes through a man. For as in Adam all are dying, so also in the Christ all will be made alive.” (1 Cor. 15:21, 22)
How will Jehovah fulfill his purpose?
Jesus taught his disciples to pray for God’s Kingdom to come and for his Father’s will to be done on earth. (Matt. 6:9, 10) Part of that purpose is for humans to live forever on earth. To that end, Jehovah appointed his Son as King of the Messianic Kingdom and has been gathering 144,000 people to work with Jesus to carry out his will. (Rev. 5:9, 10)
What is Jehovah doing in our day, and what should you do?
In our day, Jehovah is gathering “a great multitude” of people and training them for Kingdom life. (Rev. 7:9, 10; Jas. 2:8) Even though the world is divided by hatred and war, those in this group are working to leave all forms of hatred behind. They are, so to speak, already beating their swords into plowshares. (Mic. 4:3) Instead of fighting in the wars that cause so much death, they are helping people find “the life that is really life” by teaching them about the true God and his purposes. (1 Tim. 6:19) As supporters of God’s Kingdom, they may experience opposition from their families or financial problems, but Jehovah ensures that they have what they need.—Matt. 6:25, 30–33; Luke 18:29, 30) All this confirms that the Kingdom of God is a reality and that it will continue to fulfill Jehovah's purpose.
