Explain your beliefs (5 mins.) Speech. ijwfq 45. Title: Why do Jehovah's Witnesses celebrate the Lord's Supper differently from other religions? (th lesson 6).
Why do Jehovah's Witnesses celebrate the Lord's Supper differently from other religions? Well, to answer that question we have to understand that it is part of our worship and something that we faithfully follow is what the Bible indicates about how the commemoration of the death of Christ, also called the Lord's Supper or the Last Supper, should be celebrated.
However, the beliefs and customs of other religions regarding this celebration are not based on the Bible. How can we know? Let's see why it is celebrated, how often and on what date the Lord's Supper is celebrated. First of all let's read what Matthew 20:28 says.
LET'S READ MATTHEW 20:28.
That's what the Son of Man did. "He did not come to be served, but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom in exchange for many people."
Therefore, we celebrate the Lord's Supper to remember the sacrifice Jesus made for us and to show our gratitude. This celebration is not a Sacrament, nor is it a religious practice that grants any special Gift, such as forgiveness of sins. The Bible teaches that God can forgive our sins only if we exercise faith in Jesus, and not thanks to some religious rite. .
On the other hand, Jesus commanded his disciples to celebrate the Lord's Supper, but he did not specify the frequency. Some people believe it should be celebrated every month, others every week, every day, several times a day or as often as the person deems necessary. However, there are some factors that we must take into account, such as the fact that Jesus instituted the Lord's Supper on the same day that the Jewish Passover was celebrated, and hours later he died.
This was not a simple coincidence. The scriptures compare Jesus' sacrifice to the Passover Lamb. Easter was celebrated once a year. The first Christians also celebrated the commemoration of the death of Jesus once a year, and Jehovah's Witnesses do the same, as we follow the model that appears in the Bible.
Well until now we have seen why we commemorate the death of Jesus and how often. But now the question arises: What date and time can we do it? The truth is that the model that Jesus established helps us determine not only the frequency, but the day and time of this celebration. Let's now read what Matthew 26:18-20,26 says. There we read.
LET'S READ MATTHEW 26:18-20,26.
He answered them: “Go to the city, look for So-and-So and tell him: 'The Master says: “My hour is coming.* I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples in your house.”'” 19 The disciples did as Jesus commanded them and prepared everything for the Passover.
20 When evening came, he was sitting at table with the 12 disciples.
As we could read, Jesus instituted the Lord's Supper on the 14th of Nissan in the year 33 after sunset, according to the biblical lunar calendar. We Witnesses also celebrate the commemoration every year on that same date, following the example of the first Christians. The 14 Nissan of the year 33 fell on a Friday, but each year it can fall on a different day of the week. To find out which day corresponds to the 14th of Nissan, Jehovah's Witnesses use the method that was followed in the time of Jesus, and not the one used by the Jews today.
Therefore, my brothers, let us attend the commemoration to express our gratitude for the sacrifice Jesus made for us in the way the Bible teaches.
