Jehovah will raise him up (James 5:15).
Some first-century Christians were slow to put the advice into practice (James 1:22). Others showed favoritism to the rich (James 2:1-3). And others found it very difficult to control their tongue (James 3:8-10). These Christians had serious problems, but Santiago did not give them up for lost. He counseled them kindly but frankly and encouraged those who were spiritually weak to seek help from the elders. (Jas. 5:13, 14) What is the lesson? Let's see others realistically, but let's be positive. Many students have trouble putting the Bible's advice into practice (James 4:1-4). It may take you some time to eliminate negative aspects of your personality and replace them with Christian qualities. We must have the courage to tell a student what he needs to improve on. But at the same time let's be positive; Let us trust that Jehovah will attract the humble and give them the strength to make changes in their lives (James 4:10). w22.01 11 paras. 11, 12.
What did Santiago recognize? (James 3:2; note).
James maintained a correct view of himself. He did not think that because he was Jesus' brother or because of his service responsibilities he was special or more important than other Christians. He addressed them as “my dear brothers” (James 1:16, 19; 2:5). He didn't try to seem perfect either. Rather, he included himself when he said, “We all make mistakes many times” (read James 3:2 and the note).
Why should we be willing to admit our mistakes?
Lesson: Let us remember that we are all sinners. We must not think that, in some sense, we are superior to those we teach. Why not? If we give a student the impression that we never make mistakes, he may think that he will never live up to what God expects. But when we honestly acknowledge that we have sometimes struggled to apply Bible principles and tell the student how Jehovah has helped us make changes in our lives, we help him see that he too can serve him.
What were the examples that Santiago used? (James 3:2-6, 10-12).
Santiago used examples that touched the heart. No doubt he received help from the holy spirit, but he probably also learned a lot about how to teach by studying the examples his older brother Jesus had used. The examples he used in his letter are simple and have clear application (read James 3:2-6, 10-12).
Why should we use effective examples?
Lesson: Let's use effective examples. When we use appropriate examples, we help people visualize what they are hearing. Those images we paint in your mind will help you remember important truths from the Bible. Jesus was adept at using examples, and his brother James followed in his footsteps. Let's look at one of the examples he gave and see why it is so effective.
