DAILY TEXT, Wednesday November 23-2022, Do not say: May your name be hallowed (Matt. 6:9).

Let's Examine the Scriptures Every Day 2022

Wednesday, November 23

May your name be hallowed (Matt. 6:9).

Jesus said that one of the most important requests that we must include in our prayers to God is today's text. What do those words mean? To sanctify something is to make it holy, clean, or pure. But someone may wonder: “Is the name of Jehovah not holy, clean and pure? Why does it have to be sanctified?" To resolve this doubt, we have to think about everything that a name includes. A name is not just a word written on a piece of paper or spoken out loud. The Bible says, "A good name is preferable to great wealth" (Prov. 22:1, note; Eccl. 7:1). Why is it so valuable? Because it also includes what others think about the person who bears that name, that is, his reputation. So the most important thing is not the way a name is spelled or even pronounced, but what people think when they see or hear it. When people tell lies about Jehovah, they are attacking his reputation or, what amounts to the same thing, they are trying to tarnish his name. w20.06 2, 3 pars. 5-7.

What topics do Jehovah's Witnesses love to talk about?

The Sovereignty of God and the hallowing of his name are very important questions before us. Jehovah's Witnesses love to talk about these interesting topics. Now, are these two separate issues, unrelated to each other? Not at all.

We have all learned that it is necessary to clear God's name and demonstrate that Jehovah's sovereignty or way of ruling is the best. Both issues deserve our respect and attention.

What does the name Jehovah encompass?

Actually, the name of Jehovah encompasses everything that has to do with our God, including his way of ruling. Therefore, if we say that the most important thing is to clear God's name, we are also saying that we must show that Jehovah's way of ruling is the best. His name is closely related to the way in which he exercises his authority as Ruler of the universe (see the sidebar “Different Facets of the Issue”).

We all have before us a matter of vital importance: the sanctification of Jehovah's name (Ezek. 36:23; Matt. 6:9). Is the one who bears the name Jehovah really holy, good, just, and loving in all that he does? This question has several facets. Since Satan led a rebellion against God's authority, this question must be answered: Is Jehovah really the best Sovereign or Ruler we can have? And, since Adam, Eve, many of their descendants and even some angels joined the rebellion, this other question must be answered: Are there intelligent beings who are upright, that is, who loyally defend the holy name of God and do they serve you for love? This last facet gained special relevance in Job's time (Job 2:3, 4; 27:5).

What does Psalm 135:13 say about the name of God? And what questions will we answer in this article?

Jehovah's name is unique and special (read Psalm 135:13). What makes it so important? What was the first attack launched against this name? What does God do to sanctify it? And how can we help defend it? In this article, we will answer these questions.
