Let's Examine the Scriptures Every Day 2022

Saturday October 15

From now on you will be fishing for men (Luke 5:10).

The disciple Pedro learned to love the work of fishing for men. With Jehovah's help, he became very skillful (Acts 2:14, 41). Our main motive for preaching is love for Jehovah. If we have feelings of insecurity, this love can help us overcome them. When Jesus invited Peter to become a fisher of men, he told him: “Don't be afraid anymore” (Luke 5: 8-11). Not that Peter was afraid of what might happen if he became a disciple. But Jesus had just used his power to catch a large number of fish, and Peter was so amazed that he felt unworthy to work with Jesus. And you? Do you feel overwhelmed when you think about all that it takes to be a disciple of Christ? In that case, strengthen your love for Jehovah, Jesus and your neighbor, and so you will be motivated to accept Jesus' invitation to become fishers of men (Matt. 22:37, 39; John 14:15). w20.09 3 paras. What other reasons motivate us to preach?

Let's look at other reasons that motivate us to preach. One is that we want to obey this command of Jesus: “Go and make disciples” (Matt. 28:19, 20). Another is that people are “battered and abandoned” and desperately need to learn Kingdom truth (Matt. 9:36). Jehovah wants all kinds of people to come to an accurate knowledge of the truth and be saved.—1 Tim. 2:4.

How does Romans 10:13-15 show how important preaching is?

Something that will motivate you to preach is to think about the effect that this work can have. The fisherman catches fish to sell or eat, but we “catch” people to save their lives (read Romans 10:13-15; 1 Tim. 4:16).

What should a fisherman know, and why?

In Jesus' time, the Israelite fishermen had to know what kind of fish they could catch (Lev. 11:9-12). They also needed to know where to find them. Fish tend to be in areas where the water conditions are best for them and where there is enough food. And does it matter what time the fishermen go out to do their work? Consider the conversation between a brother from a Pacific island and a missionary. The brother invited him to go fishing and the missionary told him, "See you tomorrow at nine in the morning." But the brother replied: “This doesn't work like that. The time depends on the fish, not on us.”

Similarly, first-century fishers of men went fishing at times and in places where they were most likely to find fish. For example, Jesus' disciples preached in the temple, in the synagogues, from house to house, and in the marketplace (Acts 5:42; 17:17; 18:4). We also have to know well the customs of the people who live in the area where we preach. We must be flexible and fish where and when we are most likely to find people (1 Cor. 9:19-23).

What tools does Jehovah's organization give us?

Anglers need to have the right tools and know how to use them. And so are we. Jesus gave his disciples very clear instructions on how to fish for men. He told them what to wear, where to preach, and what to say (Matt. 10:5-7; Luke 10:1-11). Today, Jehovah's organization gives us the teaching kit, which contains tools that have proven to be very useful, and teaches us how to use them.c This training helps us have the confidence and ability we need to do our jobs well (2 Tim 2:15).
