Let's Examine the Scriptures Every Day 2022
Saturday October 22
Until when will I have anxiety and worries, sadness in my heart day after day? (Ps. 13:2).
We all want to live in peace and quiet. But, even if we don't like it, sometimes we all have to face difficult situations. We may be wondering the same thing as King David in today's text. There are things that can make us uneasy and over which we have little or no control. For example, we cannot stop the cost of food, clothing, and housing from rising every year. We also can't control when our coworkers or schoolmates will ask us to do something immoral or dishonest. And it is clear that we cannot end crime in the place where we live. All of this is a reflection of today's world, where most people are not guided by biblical principles. Satan, the god of this world, He knows that some will allow “the cares of this system” to keep them from serving Jehovah.—Matt. 13:22; 1 John 5:19. No wonder the world is so full of problems that stress people out. w21.01 2 paras. 1, 3.
How is it possible for us to react when we are under a lot of pressure?
When we are under a lot of pressure, we may feel like anxiety is crushing us. For example, we may worry about not earning enough money to meet our needs, or getting sick and not being able to work, or even losing our job. We may also worry about not being loyal when tempted to disobey God. And we may also worry about how we will react when Satan causes the people he controls to attack God's people. We may ask ourselves, "Is it wrong for me to worry about these things?"
What did Jesus mean when he said, “Stop fretting”?
Jesus told his disciples, “Stop worrying” (Matt. 6:25). Did he mean that we shouldn't feel even the slightest bit of anxiety? Of course not. After all, some loyal servants of Jehovah in the past suffered from anxiety and did not lose Jehovah's approval for it (1 Kings 19:4; Ps. 6:3).b Actually, Jesus was reassuring us. He did not want the problems of life to overwhelm us so much that they affect our service to God. So what can we do when we feel anxious? (See sidebar “How to do it.”)
According to Philippians 4:6, 7, what can calm our anxieties?
Pray constantly. He will be greatly relieved if he prays earnestly to Jehovah when trouble overwhelms him (1 Pet. 5:7). In answer to his prayers, he will receive “the peace of God, which is beyond what any human being can understand” (read Philippians 4:6, 7). Jehovah uses his mighty holy spirit to calm our anxieties (Gal. 5:22).
What should we keep in mind when praying to God?
When you pray to Jehovah, open your heart wide to him. Be specific: Tell him what the problem is and how it makes you feel. If you have a solution, ask for wisdom to find it and strength to put it into practice. If there is nothing you can do to fix the problem, ask Jehovah to help you stop worrying too much. If his prayers are specific, over time he will see more clearly how Jehovah answered them. If the answer is not immediate, do not get tired. Jehovah wants his prayers to be constant, as well as specific (Luke 11: 8-10).
What should we include in our prayers?
When you pray to Jehovah to let off steam, it is important that you also think about all the good things you have despite the problems and thank him for them. There will be times when you will have a hard time finding the right words to express his intense emotions. But remember that Jehovah can answer him even if he can only say: “Help me, please!” (2 Chron. 18:31; Rom. 8:26).
