Let's Examine the Scriptures Every Day 2022

Tuesday, September 27

The head of every man is the Christ, the head of the woman is the man, and the head of the Christ is God (1 Cor. 11:3).

This verse describes how Jehovah has organized his universal family. In the principle of authority, there are two key elements: the authority that one has and the responsibility for how it is exercised. Jehovah is “the head” or supreme authority, and all of his children—angels and humans alike—are accountable to him.—Rom. 14:10; Eph. 3:14, 15. Jehovah has given Jesus authority over the congregation; but, in turn, Jesus is accountable to Jehovah for how he treats us (1 Cor. 15:27). Jehovah has also given the husband authority over his wife and his children. How can a man learn to be a good head of a family? The first thing he must do is understand what Jehovah expects of him. Furthermore, he needs to know why Jehovah established the principle of authority and in what concrete ways he can imitate the examples of Jehovah and Jesus. Why is this so important? Because Jehovah has given certain authority to householders and expects them to use it well (Luke 12:48b). w21.02 2 paras. 1-3

What authority do Jehovah and Jesus have?

Jehovah is the head of his universal family, so he has the authority to dictate rules of conduct for his children and make them comply (Isa. 33:22). Jesus is the head of the Christian congregation, and he also has the right to make rules and enforce them (Gal. 6:2; Col. 1:18-20).

What authority does the Christian family head have, and what are its limits?

Like Jehovah and Jesus, the Christian family head has authority to make decisions that affect his family (Rom. 7:2; Eph. 6:4). However, his authority has limits. For example, his standards must be based on biblical principles (Prov. 3: 5, 6). Furthermore, the head of a family has no authority to dictate regulations for those who are not part of his family (Rom. 14:4). And, when his children grow up and become independent, they continue to respect him, but they are no longer under his authority (Matt. 19:5).

Why did Jehovah establish the principle of authority?

The principle of authority is a gift that Jehovah gave his family. Thanks to this principle, Jehovah's family functions in a peaceful and orderly manner.—1 Cor. 14:33, 40. If it wasn't clear who had the authority, chaos would reign and no one would be happy. For example, no one would know who has the last word in making decisions or who should take the initiative in carrying them out.

According to Ephesians 5:25, 28, how does Jehovah want a man to treat his wife?

If the principle of authority established by God is such a good thing, why do so many women feel oppressed and dominated by their husbands? The reason is that many men ignore Jehovah's principles for the family and prefer to follow local customs and traditions. It may also be that they treat their wives badly to satisfy some selfish desire. For example, a man may dominate his wife to feel more important or to show that he is "a real man." Perhaps he thinks that although he cannot force his wife to love him, he can make her fear him. There are those who use that fear to control their wives.* It is clear that this way of thinking and acting robs women of the dignity and respect they deserve. And, furthermore, it is totally against what Jehovah wants (read Ephesians 5:25, 28).
