Let's Examine the Scriptures Every Day 2022

The head of the woman is the man (1 Cor. 11:3).

All Christians are under the authority of Jesus Christ, who is a perfect head. But, when a Christian woman marries, she puts herself under the authority of an imperfect man, and this is not always easy. So when you are considering whether or not to marry a certain brother, you would do well to ask yourself, “How do I know that this brother will be a good head of the family? Is serving Jehovah the most important thing in his life? If not, what makes me think he'll be a good spiritual head after we're married? On the other hand, the sister should also ask herself: “What qualities can I bring to the marriage? Am I patient and generous? How strong is my relationship with Jehovah?” (Eccl. 4:9, 12). The happiness that a woman feels in her marriage will depend to some extent on the decisions that she makes before getting married. Millions of sisters set a fine example by being obedient to their husbands. It is a pleasure to serve Jehovah alongside these sisters, and we commend them for being so loyal. w21.02 8 paras. 1, 2

What examples do we find in the Bible?

Some may think that someone who submits to authority is a weak person. Nothing could be further from the truth. In the Bible, we find many examples of people who submitted to authority and yet had a well-defined personality. Let's see what we can learn from Jesus, Abigail and Mary.

Explain why Jesus respects Jehovah's authority.

Jesus respects Jehovah's authority. Does he do it because of lack of intelligence or skill? No, because only a very intelligent person could teach as simply and clearly as Jesus did (John 7:45, 46). Jehovah has such respect for Jesus' abilities that he allowed him to work alongside him when he created the universe.—Prov. 8:30; Heb. 1:2-4. And, since Jesus was resurrected, Jehovah has given him “all authority in heaven and on earth” (Matt. 28:18). Despite having so many abilities, Jesus still looks to Jehovah for guidance, and he does so because he loves his Father (John 14:31).

What can husbands learn from Jehovah's example? b) What can you learn from what Proverbs 31 says?

What can husbands learn? Jehovah did not establish the principle of authority because he thinks that women are inferior to men. He has made this clear by choosing both women and men to rule with Jesus (Gal. 3:26-29). Just as Jehovah has shown that he trusts his Son by giving her authority, the wise husband will also give his wife some measure of authority. God's Word describes a competent wife as a woman who can oversee her household, buy and sell land, and do business (read Proverbs 31:15, 16, 18). She is not a slave, she has no right to give her opinion. Rather, her husband trusts her and considers her ideas (read Proverbs 31:11, 26, 27). When a man respects her wife in this way, it is a pleasure for her to be under her authority.
