Let's Examine the Scriptures Every Day 2022

One thing is certain: forgetting the things that are left behind and reaching for the things to come, I press on toward the goal (Phil. 3:13, 14).

Good memories are a gift from Jehovah; but no matter how good our life has been, our future in the new world will be better. Others may hurt us, but if we decide to forgive we can continue to move forward. Too much guilt can cause us to serve Jehovah without joy. But, like the apostle Paul, we must convince ourselves that Jehovah has forgiven us (1 Tim. 1:12-15). In the new world that we await, where we will enjoy eternal life, we will not have to carry any bad memories. The Bible says that, at that time, “the things of the past will not be remembered” (Isa. 65:17). Some of us have been serving Jehovah for many years and are already very old; but imagine, in the new world we will be young again (Job 33:25). So let us be determined not to live in the past, and live the present thinking about the future. w20.11 24 para. 4; 29 paras. 18, 19

As Leviticus 19:18 indicates, when might it be especially difficult to overcome resentment?

(Read Leviticus 19:18). It is often difficult for us to forgive when the person who offended us is a brother, a good friend or a family member. On one occasion, a Christian woman wrongly accused another sister of stealing money from her. She later apologized, but the sister who had been accused couldn't stop thinking about what happened. We may not have seen ourselves in a situation like this, but surely most of us have felt that we could not overcome resentment.

What can help us overcome resentment?

What can help us overcome resentment? To begin with, remember that Jehovah sees everything. He is aware of all the problems and injustices that we suffer (Heb. 4:13). He suffers when he sees us suffer (Is. 63: 9). And he promises that in time he will repair any damage injustices have caused us (Rev. 21:3, 4).

How does it benefit us to get rid of resentment?

We must also remember that freeing ourselves from resentment benefits us. That is what happened to the sister who was mistakenly accused. Over time, she managed to put her rancor behind her. She understood that if we forgive others, Jehovah forgives us (Matt. 6:14). Not that she made light of what the other sister had done to her, but she decided to get rid of her resentment. As a result, she was able to be happier and concentrate on her service to Jehovah.
